Year 8 Science

Year 8 Students have been investigating how colour can affect temperature.

Buzz Brennan, Jasmine McIntyre, Chloe Dubois, Charlotte Henderson, Mattea Hollis and Hunter Adams were part of a one-day meeting organised for high school students as part of UNISTEM DAY 2023.  The students departed Edenhope College at 6am and travelled by mini bus, train and tram to reach GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre). The event was solely dedicated to the dissemination of stem cell research. The event showcased the cutting edge research and painted a picture of the daily work of a scientist focussing on heart health and disease.  The event involved bringing together  87 Universities and Research Institutes in Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands and the United kingdom with high school students from around the world.  The program began by introducing students to stem cells and careers in science. The students completed hands on activities showcasing the scientific research by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. Students saw a heart patch, cardiac organoids and valves produced by stem cells to repair hearts. They also learnt that a gene on chromosome 1 affects the dilation of ventricles and that there are ethical issues that need to be considered when donating blood and tissues for research. The students are to be congratulated for taking up the opportunity and being attentive, curious and willing to learn in a safe and respectful manner.

Thank you Mr McClure for driving the mini bus.
