Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

We are so pleased with the number of home reading folders that were returned last week ready for new readers. Thank you for your support with our home reading program. As the weeks pass we are sure you will be amazed at your child's developing decoding skills, their knowledge around digraphs and trigraphs and how they can combine this with their background knowledge to make meaning from the texts they read.

We are noticing many students with empty lunchboxes by lunchtime as students are eating everything in their lunchbox in the morning or recess. We have encouraged students to take some responsibility and be involved in packing their own lunchboxes at home, putting in an extra piece of fruit or a sandwich. We have also encouraged students to let parents know if they would like a different sandwich filling. This is a great opportunity for them to help you in the kitchen! Please note that the office does not provide sandwiches for students who have eaten their lunch at morning tea time.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Hat Parade in Week 11 and invite you to stay for morning tea with your children afterwards.

English

We are:

  • revising compound words that we know
  • learning about words that are nouns
  • learning to read and spell new tricky words

Students know they are successful when they:

  • understand that a compound word is made up of two separate words
  • understand that a noun is a person, place or thing
  • can read and spell the tricky words saw, friend, school, woman, home and where and identify the tricky part of the word

Mathematics

We are learning to use metres to measure lengths and distances.

Students know they are successful when they:

  • can measure lengths using a metre ruler without gaps or overlaps
  • know that estimating is like having a good guess
  • use 'm' as an abbreviation for metres and use it to record length

We are learning to use an equal arm balance to compare the masses of two objects

Students are successful when they can:

  • use an equal-arm balance to measure the weight of two different objects
  • predict the action of an equal-arm balance before placing particular objects in each pan
  • place objects on an equal-arm balance to make it level
  • use uniform informal units to measure the mass of an object by obtaining a level balance on an equal-arm balance

Dates to remember

  • Friday 24th March - Colours for the Kids - SRC supported Ronald McDonald House fundraiser
  • Thursday 6th April from 10:15 am - K-2 Hat Parade on the pebbled area if weather fine or in the hall if wet
