PREP

The preps have been working hard on their learning in the first half of the term.

In reading, they have been practicing letter sounds, using Reading Eggs, learning new games and much more. Students have been writing about their experiences through the ‘Think, Talk, Draw, Write’ process.

It has been so pleasing to see them have a try even when it is hard.

Students have also been learning about patterns and shapes in Maths.

Awesome effort Preps!

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

The Year 2’s are now relaxed and ready to learn in their new classroom environments with their new teachers and classmates.

In Reading the focus has been on comprehension and we have been exploring imaginative texts and information texts. Each student has also been creating their own individual reading goals during conferences with their classroom teachers. In our storybook lessons we have been reading stories including Willy the Wimp, The Snail and the Whale and Pete the Sheep followed up by discussing the story. After that we do our word work where we work on the vocabulary in the book and then we explore beyond the book where students complete written tasks linking the book to their writing. Through storybooks students are exposed to language that they might not necessarily find in everyday conversations. Please continue to read to your child at home as well as listening to them read for a minimum of 5 times per week.

During our Grammar lessons we have been exploring nouns including common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns. Students are working on how to improve our written work using adjectives; including how to identify them in a sentence.

In Writing our focus has been on writing Recounts. Students are reminded that a Recount is something that has already happened and not about something that is going to happen in the future. Features of a Recount include writing about who, what where, when, and why, correct sequencing of events, creating a conclusion by writing an opinion about their recount.  Some of our writing goals include correct spelling, using punctuation, starting our sentences and proper nouns using a capital letter. Students are also focusing on stamina (writing more by focusing on details).

In Numeracy, Year 2 have been learning about Place Value. Students have been using MAB blocks to model numbers up into the thousands. Students need to be able to expand numbers e.g., 6,592 =6000+500+90+2 and when asked what does the place value of the five in  6,592 is 500 not five. Students have developed their maths goals together with their teacher.

In Humanities we have been exploring how we are similar and different to each other and creating a positive classroom culture together. Students have been working together and learning accept their differences. In class they have been completing tasks to understand their differences. In Health they have been looking at healthy choices in relations to food and sports. Also, we have been looking at advertising and how it can influence them positively to eat a balanced diet e.g., - the banana advertisement (Make those bodies sing) and we have looked at junk food advertisements and when they play them (often during children’s programs) to try to entice children to eat these foods and promotions of toys to collect.

In Science we have been looking at the story of water and how fresh water makes it into our taps for us to drink. The students have also been exploring water uses and the water cycle.

Thank You from The Year 2 Team.
