CURRICULUM

What a week we have enjoyed in the Leadership Centre! It all began on Monday with 5/6 planning day where our students enjoyed a great day with their specialist teachers. During this day, the 5/6 teachers collaborated and planned what promises to be a fun-filled albeit, busy Term 4.

Our next major event was the District Athletics carnival where several of our students competed with other local primary schools in the track and field disciplines. Many of our students enjoyed the highs of achieving personal bests with some students being selected to compete in the Division Athletics carnival in Term 4. Congratulations to our 5/6 students who competed with such pride and happiness!

On Thursday we welcomed 3 local schools to compete with us in the Nunawading Interschool debating competition. Selected Year 6 students prepared persuasive speeches on the topics, ‘That we should ban spelling tests’’ and ‘That we should try to bring back extinct species of animals’ which were then used in debates against other schools. Our students prepared well thought our arguments as well as effective rebuttals. We were all excited to then receive the secret topic of ‘That we should only have group projects at school’. Students only had 90 minutes to prepare these speeches with no assistance from staff and they did this with ease and excellence. Congratulations to all our Year 6s who competed with respect and integrity throughout the day, special mention to Debate Team 1 and Debate Team 3 who were undefeated. Further congratulations to Sukriti who was one of the best speakers of the day.

Lastly on Friday, we celebrated with our community our ICE showcase. It was wonderful for our students to present their work to the whole community, sharing their creative selves. An excellent way to top off a fantastic week!

Despite the busyness of the week, plenty of learning opportunities also happened this week.

In Reading, students have been exploring Aristotle's Pillars of Persuasion, learning about how authors use ‘ethos, logos and pathos’ to influence the reader to feel a certain way about their text. Students completed a portfolio task identifying how the author of our class novel, The Boy who Harnessed the Wind; used pathos to build empathy, used ethos to create a believable, credible text and used logos giving us factual information of how drought can cause poverty.

Students have enjoyed publishing their information and narrative texts this week. They have enjoyed writing for a purpose with Information reports being turned into websites and narrative texts being published in our library! Look out for these writing pieces on Seesaw over the next few days.

If your child has come home announcing, we are making a carnival in Maths, they are absolutely correct! We have been exploring the chance elements of carnival games and how quite often, the probability of winning these games can be unlikely. When creating these games, students are identifying the outcomes of their game noting what the probability of winning compared to losing is.

Our Journey to Discovery unit is coming to an end this week with our Guided Inquiry showcase on Thursday afternoon. The students have enjoyed exploring our solar system as well as creating a new planet which includes everything needed for human existence.

As the Term 3 comes to an end, we would like thank you all for your continued support this term. Enjoy your school break and we will see on Monday October 3rd!
