Sub-school Restructure

Restructuring our Sub-schools in 2023

Our sub-school structure is changing next year! We will be moving to a year 7-8 Middle School and a year 9-12 Senior School.

WHY RESTRUCTURE?

There’s a couple of reasons why we are making this change, but the most compelling reason is that we want to focus even more on fostering high expectations around learning.

We have made some significant changes to our learning and teaching by transitioning to a developmental approach to assessment and focusing on maximising the learning growth for every student. To further support this, we want our Middle and Senior sub-school teams to be focusing on this too and we believe that, by restructuring our sub-schools, we can achieve this.

When speaking to students, particularly those in year 11 and 12, most of them tell us, ‘we wish we were told about VCE and VCAL (next year VM) earlier.’ They wish we had started conversations earlier about the many pathways available, the myriad of choices they will need to start making at the end of year 8 and the expectations around learning that grow exponentially as students move through Senior School.

And we agree with what the students have been telling us. There are more options, pathways, and choices than ever before. The world beyond school is a complex one and most people when they transition out of school will need skills and information to navigate it successfully. And it’s imperative that we are empowering our students to be resilient young people who are up for the challenge and are adequately prepared to navigate life beyond school – it’s a critical part of our school vision.

Furthermore, the changes we have made to our year 9/10 curriculum means that we can streamline our resources more effectively with year 9 students being included in our Senior School. Most of our 9/10 classes are now mixed and it doesn’t make sense that students in the one class are supported by two different sub-school teams!

Feedback and Discussion

We are very open to feedback, and we highly value the opportunity to discuss whole school initiatives with our school community in more depth.

We will be creating opportunities in the coming weeks for students to attend lunch forums to provide feedback and we are inviting parents who wish to meet with us to discuss the sub-school restructure in more detail to come along to a Webex on Tuesday 6th September at 6pm.
