Term 3, Week 10 2022

Term 3 in Foundation has shown some excitement around learning through fairy tales. It kicked off with dress ups of favourite fairy tale characters and ended with deeper comprehension skills and some innovative STEM designs to help solve fairy tale problems.

Reading

The fairy tale mentor texts have been used through out this term as a model to develop sticky note thinking. This type of comprehension strategy is used throughout all year levels at BPS right up to Grade 6! The comprehension areas in sticky note thinking have included, favourite parts, visualising details, humorous parts, shocking parts, interesting parts, important parts, connections and questions. While reading their own books independently, now students are able to track their thinking by using sticky notes when reading different parts of their texts. The other skills focused on this term has been developing decoding strategies and fluency.

Writing

The full writing process is now happening in Foundation! They are brainstorming their ideas in the prewriting stage, drafting sentences or structuring different text types, editing punctuation, grammar and spelling, as well as, publishing their pieces to present it in a creative way.

Maths

Many different Maths areas have been taught this term, including location combined with coding, shapes, sharing and grouping, as well as subtraction. Many of these areas have been linked with the fairy tale context. For example, students had to code bluebots to follow a path from Little Red Riding Hood’s house to her grandmother’s house. For subtraction, they had to find the difference between their height and the giant’s height from Jack and the Beanstalk. The heights were measured with icypole sticks.

We encourage you to keep talking to your child’s classroom teachers for updates on their learning.

Happy Holidays!
