AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS WEEK

The college participated in Australian Business Week (ABW) activities from August 22–26. The Year 11 Commerce and VCAL students were actively engaged in various activities all week. In the program, groups of students were required to create a service or product and create a commercial to promote the business. They learnt valuable skills concerning how a business operates by taking on specific roles in the business. They also improved their communication skills through teamwork and collaboration. The winners ‘Sunrise Resort’ created a childcare service within the resort.

LEADERSHIP SPEECHES

The 2023 College Captain speeches took place on Thursday August 18 in the Sacred Heart Church. We were fortunate to have a large number of outstanding applicants who presented to the Year 9, 10 and 11 students. This year we had nine females – Lily Bruhn, Tamika Hall, Kaitlin Hards, Matisse Hill, Millie Kuhne, Mila Klarich, Lily Lawrence, Hannah-Leesha Moodley and Laila Zappia, and five males – Finn Beattie, Anthony De Maria, Harrison Hunt, Tom Sapuppo and Alexandru Stoica apply for the College Captain position.

Students and staff were then asked to vote with preferences allowing us to shortlist four females and four males for interviews with Mr Kluske and me.

The number of applicants (39 students) for various student leadership roles highlighted both the success of the Year 11 Leadership Day (held on Tuesday July 26) and the depth of our outstanding Year 11 cohort.

SPORTS REPORT

The Year 7 Boys Football team were successful at LMR level and moved onto State (SVS). While they won the quarter final, they lost to Maribyrnong College (a government-funded school specialising in sport) in the semi-final.  A great effort from our Year 7 boys – with a very proud coach (Mr Dion Collins).

Our students will represent the college in Basketball and Table Tennis at the SSVS level in the final week of the term.

FATHER'S DAY BREAKFAST AND YEAR 9 PRESENTATION

Glenn Manton was the guest speaker at the Father’s Day Breakfast. He told a story of a male role model who supported him to be a better AFL footballer and a better man.

Glenn Manton is immediately recognisable as a former AFL champion and quick-witted media performer. But there is much more to Glenn than that! He is the co-founder of Whitelion, a seasoned stage performer, innovative author and highly regarded for his professional commitment to young people. Glenn has curated his diverse life into an array of unique stories to establish himself as one of Australia's most provocative and involving speakers. Glenn's life experience has taken him from the grit and grind of inner city Melbourne to the red dust of Australia’s Indigenous communities to the leafy landscape of Bavarian Germany, where he raced a bobsled for Australia.

Glenn also spoke to the Year 9 cohort and spent some time with some Year 12 students.

CAMPS

After two years of COVID lockdowns preventing the Snow Camp, Mr Kluske could again lead the Year 11 students (and staff) to the Perisher snowfields. By all reports, this was a fantastic experience and enjoyed by all.

The Year 7 Victor Harbor camp is taking place this week, Monday September 12 through to Friday September 16.

The Year 9 Central Australia camp will take place over the Term 3 school holidays. These camps are being run for the first time, and students and staff have been looking forward to trying new things and building positive relationships through a sense of connectedness and belonging.

MERCY MASS/R U OK? DAY

The Mercy Mass was held on Thursday September 8, a week earlier than Mercy Week, to accommodate the Year 7 Camp. The tradition of all students receiving an ice cream following the Mass was well received by students and staff.

This day also coincided with R U OK? A day when students received a BBQ lunch from the wellbeing team. Some of our student musicians also shared their talents at lunchtime.

COLLEGE BALL

The College Ball took place on Friday September 9, with a Roaring 20’s Theme. The excitement about this event After not being able to run it in previous years due to COVID, students in Years 9 to 12 were very excited about this event (as were the staff). A fun night was had by all.

BRIGHT SPARKS

The Bright Sparks program concluded on Wednesday August 10, after running for four weeks. In total, we had 24 students attend the various sessions, with 12–5 attending each session. We will now look to 2023 and involve a different Learning Area.

FRAYNE SPEECH FESTIVAL

The Frayne Speech Festival was held at Emmanuel College in Warrnambool on Friday August 26. Mrs Helen Gowers, Mr Michael Carty, and Ms Jackie Gorman accompanied our students. These five young women made our college proud with their considered arguments and presentations.
