Year 12 VCAL student Abbey C has been working at SouWest Brewery doing a Head Start School Based Apprenticeship, studying Certificate III in Commercial Cookery through Box Hill Tafe.
Abbey has a terrific work ethic at school and employment. She broke her thumb this year and only missed minimal workdays at SouWest Brewery. She worked with her employer to be on light duties until her thumb was healed.
Abbey has completed all her Year 12 assessment tasks so has finished and can now focus on her life after school. She is up to date with her trade school and her trainer is impressed at the level of work she continually submits. Abbey is a superstar and Head Start Barwon are so proud of all her hard work this year and is an asset to the team at SouWest Brewery.
We asked Abbey to answer some questions about being a Head Start SBAT.
What is the hardest part about juggling schoolwork, working and trade school?
Not having a good work and social life balance. Always feeling a bit burnt out.
What do you love about being a School Based Apprenticeship (SBAT)?
Having a head start on my career before finishing school.
What does your workday look like?
Start work between 8am-10am depending on my work shift. Prepping your area for the day and then we open at 12pm. Then everyone has a break around 3pm for an hour or so. Then doing some more preparation for dinner, then our kitchen closes at 8:30pm. So we pack up and we are usually finished by 9:30pm.
What is the best thing you have done at work?
Worked through a lunch or dinner rush by myself.
What is the worst thing you have done at work?
Requesting too many days off.
