HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

SPECIALISED PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDIES (SEMESTER 1)

Specialised PE provides students with the opportunity to experience, engage with, and develop a deeper appreciation of a wide variety sports by focusing on the many different aspects involved with competing in elite-level sports. This course aims to offer students the opportunity to engage and experience an introductory representation of the Year 11 ATAR PE Studies course and the certificate III in Sport, Fitness and Recreation. This course is highy practical in nature. 

 

Topics that are covered in this course include: 

  • Functional anatomy: understanding how various systems such as the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, & respiratory system work together to produce sport-specific movements. 
  • Biomechanics: learning how muscles, bones and joints work together to create movement, including the interaction between athletes and their equipment. 
  • Motor Learning: understanding how athletes develop skills and how factors such as age and experience affect the requirements of learning such skills. 
  • Introductory coaching: understanding, designing and executing periodisation plans & individual session plans to teach the skills required for various sports. 

All students who have an interest in sports are encouraged to join this course and it is highly practical in nature. There will be opportunities for students to participate in and experience a wide range of sports, including sports not traditionally practiced in regular PE lessons. Students will also be offered the opportunity to put into practice their coaching knowledge and skills during the Year 7 & 8 lightning carnivals and the junior school inter-house carnivals.  

 

A consumables charge of approximately $80.00 will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees. 

 

SPECIALIST FOOTBALL WITH J&J FOOTBALL TRAINING (SEMESTER 2)

The Specialist Football course provides students with the opportunity to further develop skills, fitness, knowledge, and understanding of football. The course builds on Football General and explores each of these areas in greater depth. From advanced practical skills, and knowledge of strategies and tactics specific to the game of football, to progressive nutritional requirements, training methods, fitness components, mental skills, and recovery methods for footballers. There will also be a greater emphasis on students developing their skills to umpire and coach during the sessions, thus giving them the skills for future employment.    

 

This course is aimed at students who want to develop their skills and tactics to a deeper level and seeks students that already have an understanding of the game and some experience of the game in order to build a strong and supportive football environment.   

 Students in this course will be encouraged to participate at ASC and at their local community level by playing, coaching, and officiating. There will be opportunities for students to play competitively for ASC in the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC), School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions as required, and to join and compete in the new 5 aside Futsal competition at Striker Indoor Sports and Fitness, on addition to their club/community commitments.  

  

The Specialist Football program also has access to weekly training sessions and accreditations towards coaching and umpiring certificates through elite coaches at J&J Football Training.   

 

A consumables charge of approximately $80.00 will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.    

SPECIALIST NETBALL (SEMESTER 1)

 The Specialist Physical Education Netball course provides students with the opportunity to develop their practical skills, fitness levels, and knowledge and understanding of tactics in Netball. Additionally, students will learn about nutritional requirements, mental skills, and training methods including strength & conditioning, injury prevention and recovery methods; and they will have the opportunity to learn from guest presenters.  

 

The Specialist Physical Education Netball course will have links to community organisations and will be delivered by an expert in the field. Students should be willing to be actively engage with the course and the netball community. 

 

A major priority of the course is to encourage the participation of students in Netball; both at the College and local community level in a playing, officiating and coaching role. Netball students will be expected to try out for and represent the College in interschool competitions, such as Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) and School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions and will be encouraged to play at club level. 

 

Students will also be exposed to umpiring and coaching development across the course and will have the opportunity to work towards coaching and umpiring accreditations. 

 

The Netball Specialist course will have links to community organisations and will be delivered by an expert in the field. Students have the opportunity to work towards coaching and umpiring accreditations.  

SPECIALIST BASKETBALL (SEMESTER 1) 

The Specialist Basketball  Program provides an opportunity for talented students to extend their abilities in basketball. Personalised teaching and video analysis at an elite level will be implemented to support students in developing their individual skills, team tactics and strategies, allowing them to reach their potential and achieve success in basketball. Students will also study topics that reinforce the importance of fitness, including nutrition, flexibility, strengthening, recovery and endurance. Accredited courses in scoring, officiating and coaching will be available, as well as opportunities to learn from expert guest speakers. Students should be willing to actively engage with the course and the basketball community. There will be opportunities for students to play competitively for the College in Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) and School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions competitions. 

 

Willetton Basketball Stadium will be used for practical sessions, and a kit will be provided. This course will incur a fee, estimated at $100, which will contribute towards facility hire, transport, equipment and enrolment in accredited courses. This course is aimed at students who are playing at a high level and it is expected that students have a repertoire of advanced skills. 

BASKETBALL GENERAL (SEMESTER 2)

The Specialised Basketball General Program provides students with an opportunity to improve their skills, fitness and knowledge about basketball. The course will focus on developing offensive and defensive individual skills, implementing fitness programs and analysing team strategies. Accredited courses in scoring, officiating and coaching will be available to facilitate a range of options for involvement in the basketball and College community.  

 

Students who currently play at club level (in a domestic competition) should opt for this course. This course will incur a fee, estimated at $100, which will contribute towards specialist facility hire, transport, equipment, enrolment in accredited courses and a kit. 

 

RECREATION AND HEALTH FOR LIFE (SEMESTER 2)

The benefits of utilising physical activity and recreational activities as a vehicle for holistic wellness is becoming more crucial every year. 

  

Through participation in a variety of activities students have the opportunity to become proactive and gain knowledge and understanding of health wellbeing through outdoor recreational pursuits alongside more traditional fitness methods. Students can chose from a variety of activities that include yoga, meditation, Pilates, walking, stand up, a variety of fitness classes, cooking, reading, dancing, music, knitting, swimming, social sport and bike riding. Students are also able to suggest activities that haven’t previously been included and partake in those activities throughout the course. Students will partake in activities on and off the campus. 

 

This course will provide students with the tools and up to date information about wellness to encourage them to prioritise their own wellbeing whilst at the College and in their future.  

  

At All Saints’ College, students pursue this concept through the outdoors and along the way, they will explore the benefits that exposure to the outdoors and the unstructured lifestyle can bring. In particular, students will focus on identifying these benefits and translating them into real world, usable skills that promote resilience and life awareness. This course combines recreational activities with wellness and is suited to all levels. 

 

This course is a great opportunity to try new things. 

AQUATIC STUDIES: BIKE, BOAT AND BOARD (SEMESTER 2)

This course will develop skills, knowledge and safe attitudes for numerous aquatic and land based environments. Although this is a practical based unit, students will take part in some theory exploring the importance of sustainability, keeping our world clean and healthy and understanding weather and its impacts. All units in Bike, Boat and Board develop teamwork, leadership, cooperation and communication skills. 

  • Surfing – Students will learn basic skills including how to paddle a board and how to stand up. A theme of water safety will be an overarching focus where students will learn to identify different wave and rip types. 
  • Rowing – Students will learn about the parts of a boat, how to rig their craft and stroke technique.  
  • Triathlon – During the unit students will develop their swimming, running and bike riding skills, and transitions between each leg. Students will have the chance to participate in an Interschool competition as individuals or as teams if they wish. 

RLSS Bronze Star/Medallion qualification  

Students will have the chance to acquire their which will be valid for the year. This is a necessary requirement is students wish to obtain jobs around water environments. Students must be able to competently swim 400 metres and tread water for 10mins.

AQUATIC STUDIES: WIND WATER WAVES (SEMESTER 1)

This course will develop skills, knowledge and safe attitudes for numerous aquatic environments. Throughout this is a practical based unit, students will take part in some theory exploring the importance of wind, waves and water in our world.  

   

STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING: Students will learn skills including how to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue techniques and numerous stroke and turning techniques on flat water. These sessions will take place off campus at Shelley Foreshore on the Swan River. 

SAILING: Will see students learn about the anatomy of a sailing boat including how to correctly rig a boat. They will develop the ability to read the wind and weather conditions and to apply the correct techniques to enhance performance. Students will learn to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue if capsizing, jibe and tact.  Students will be instructed by external sailing professional offsite at South Perth Foreshore.  

DIVING:  Will see students travel to HBF Stadium to learn the sport of Diving. Students will learn the skills of springboard and platform diving, under the watchful and very experienced WA diving instructors.  

SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING: Students will be given the opportunity to try one of Australia’s fastest growing sports. Instructors from Synchronised Swimming WA will teach the students the physical and artistic skills required in synchronised swimming.  

RECREATIONAL SKIPPERS TICKET (RST): Students will have the opportunity to acquire their skippers’ ticket. The unit will cover the theoretical component of the course, preparing students to sit the written examination part of this qualification. Students must be able to competently swim 300 metres.  If students wish to take up this opportunity, this will be arranged by the teacher at an additional cost.  

 

A consumables charge of approximately $150.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.  

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: MUIR (SEMESTER 1)

Jon Muir is the recipient of the Australian Geographic Society Lifetime of Adventure Award that recognises those who have lived a life of exploration and adventure, but who have also given back and inspired others. 

 

This course is designed to provide a range of outdoor skills, knowledge and the ability to safely engage in outdoor pursuits. attitudes for safe outdoor participation. During Term 1 and 2, the students will take part in: 

  

SNORKELLING:  

Students will learn how to correctly snorkel, the various techniques involved, equipment use and maintenance, enabling students to build confidence to snorkel and swim safely. Multiple snorkelling lessons will take the students off campus to explore Coogee Snorkel Trail. This unit culminates in a two-day, one night camp at Rottnest Island where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop skills learnt in class.  

ORIENTEERING: Students will learn how to read a map, identifying key points and areas using the legend, how to use a compass to navigate courses on and off campus along with a number of other Orienteering skills. , the rules of orienteering, and how to perform at a competition level. Students will be involvedparticipate in a one-day excursion to Jorgensen National Park in Kalamunda. A select group of students will also competing in the Orienteering State Championships.  and a one day competition. 

ARCHERY: Students will learn the techniques and skills of Archery and the correct use of equipment in a fun and safe environment on the College oval.  

 

There is a camp cost of approximately $100.00 which includes accommodation, transport and specialist instruction. A consumables charge of approximately $150.00 per student will be applied to this course.. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees. 

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: LOCK (SEMESTER 2)

This course is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe participation in outdoor activities, encouraging personal and group responsibility and teamwork and to build important lifelong ‘soft skills’ such as organisation, personal preparation, time management and working with others, as part of a group and as a leader.   

KAYAKING: Learn Kayaking skills on flat water including safety skills, equipment management, teamwork and communication at Shelley Foreshore. 

FISHING: How to fish, how to catch bream, how to rig your rod and associated equipment, the best fishing spots around the Swan River, to understand the implications of fish stocks and bag catch limits, how to prepare fish for cooking as well as how to cook them correctly. 

ROCK CLIMBING: Students will learn the skills and techniques to climb and belay both on the College’s artificial wall and external Rock Climbing centres. An effective medium to promote responsibility for oneself and others, students will learn about equipment, communication and safety protocols. 

CAMP SKILLS: How to manage yourself, your equipment and your group, how to safely recreate in the outdoors, with focus on organisation, communication skills, time management, planning, preparation and teamwork. Environmental impact on recreation areas, Mountain biking, rafting and cooking in a camp environment. 

  

The course culminates in a three day, two night camp at Honeymoon Pool (Wellington Dam National Park) where the focus is on safe and successful outdoor learning while practising the skills learnt throughout the Semester.  

  

There is a camp cost of approximately $180.00 which includes specialist instructors, transport and specialist equipment. A consumables charge of approximately $150.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
