DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

GAME DESIGN (SEMESTER 1)

This course gives you the opportunity to design and produce computer games. In this course you will learn how to plan, design, build and monetise your computer games. When creating games you will use a range programming languages and engines to cater for different levels of ability. The course will give you the opportunity to build on your programming and graphic design skills using Godot, a Python based engine and GameMaker. Within this course there is a strong focus on design through the creation of sprites and levels. Project management will also feature in the course, and you will need to create proposals and milestones for the completion of your game.  

 

The skills that you develop in course will assist you in the following ATAR courses: Computer Science, Applied Information Technology (AIT) and Design. 

 

CYBER SECURITY (SEMESTER 2)

As our world becomes increasingly dependent on technology and the Internet, companies such as Sony are coming to the realisation that protecting themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks is essential to a company’s success. Cyber Security is a growing field, and this course aims to equip you with the latest skills and tools that will allow you to identify vulnerabilities and come up with policies and software programs that will protect you from this ever-evolving threat. This course will involve a large amount of skills-based practical activities and Cyber Security exercises. Throughout the course you will examine the fundamental principles of how information is stored and communicated via a computer network. You will also investigate the potential vulnerabilities in networks and how attackers exploit them. An opportunity will be available to visit the Cyber Security Centre at ECU Joondalup. 

 

The skills that you develop in course will assist you in the following ATAR courses: Computer Science, Applied Information Technology (AIT) and Design.

BIG DATA BIG BUSINESS (SEMESTER 2)

This is an advanced computing class that focusses on the importance of data storing, manipulation and analysis. Students who excel in the fields of Science, Technology, Enterprise and Maths will see this unit as challenging and rewarding. By completing this unit students will gain a strong understanding of Python the most popular programming language in the world. Other assessments will focus on the application of data in a business setting. Students will be given real life scenarios where data mining and trend analysis is used to inform business decisions. 

 

The skills that you develop in course will assist you in Year 11 ATAR Computer Science.  

STEM – ROBOTICS FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (SEMESTER 2)

The First Lego League is a nationally run competition that helps develop your problem-solving skills. The competition will allow you to use the skills gained in the introduction to robotics course and apply them to specific challenges. These STEM based problem solving challenges require you to design, build and program a LEGO robot that completes missions issued by LEGO. The culmination of all your efforts will lead to your participation in the First Lego League competition that is held at Curtin University. The skills learnt in this course will enhance your success in WACE Subjects such as Computer Science. In ever-changing job market that values automation, collaboration, problem-solving and technology this course is a must. 

CAFÉ CULTURE (SEMESTER 1 AND 2)

Do you have passion for coffee or making hot drinks? Have you wondered how to create a successful food? Over a semester you will be immersed into the world of making and preparing café style drinks and food. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in using an espresso coffee machine to make a variety of different styles of hot drinks. Some cold beverages served in Cafes are also a focus. Of course, when you are drinking a hot drink, you need something delicious and healthy to eat, so this course will focus on producing café style food such as bruschetta, soups, slices, and cakes. 

 

An opportunity to showcase your skills and techniques in preparing and producing food and drinks is part of the course. 

 

A consumables charge will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees. 

 

GREAT BAKE OFF (SEMESTER 1 AND 2)

Have you ever wondered what makes a cake rise, how to make crispy or soft bsicuits, how to bake a moist cake, what are the best ingredients for a sausage roll or what makes the pastry on a sausage rolls so crispy. Do you know the importance of yeast in a pizza? Perhaps you want to bake and decorate a celebration cake or even create tasty and appetising food for a special event. 

 

This unit will introduce you to these concepts and more!  

 

Food Safety and Hygiene and using the Technology Process to develop ideas and produce food products are important aspects of the concepts covered.  You will get opportunities to work in groups and to work individually while developing your food skills and techniques.

NEXT LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY (SEMESTER 1)

Next Level Photography is a beginner’s course in taking your photography skills to the next level. You will learn how to improve your composition, use camera modes beyond automatic and learn how to manipulate your images in Adobe Photoshop. You will also learn how to use Adobe InDesign to develop eye-catching portfolios. Year 9 students and students with no or little experience will learn some essential photography skills. Students who have completed Photography in Year 9 will get the opportunity to revisit some techniques in some new exciting activities and further skills needed for Year 11 and 12 studies.

PHOTO STORIES (SEMESTER 2)

Photo Stories is designed to assist you in putting more meaning into your photographic work. You will learn how you can use a camera, lighting and Photoshop techniques to tell a story, create an artwork and/or advertise a product or service. This course is perfect for those new to Photography and Photoshop and for those who have existing skills they wish to develop.

 

A consumables charge will be applied to this course.  This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.  

 

GRAPHIC IMAGING / GRAPHIC DESIGN / DIGITAL DESIGN (SEMESTER 1 AND 2)

Graphic Imaging is a course focused on familiarizing students with the use of digital tools and software in graphic design. Students will learn about the principles of design, colour theory, typography, layout, and image manipulation, among others.   

 

The course introduces students to the basic design concepts and principals. They will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create digital artwork, logos, and layouts for print and web media.  Throughout the course, students will work on a range of projects that challenge their creativity and problem-solving skills. They will explore different styles of design and learn how to apply them to real-world scenarios. 

 

MAKE A SUSHI BOARD (SEMESTER 2)

In this course you will learn the key concepts, techniques and tools to design and build a Sushi Board for a client.  Your design must take into account any traditional or cultural expectations associated with preparing or serving Japanese cuisine.  You will be encouraged to be a creative problem solver and develop your design skills through the Design Thinking approach. Skills you will learn include the use of traditional fixed machinery, portable power tools and hand tools in the wood/metal workshops. This will be further enhanced with the equipment available in the technology hub. This includes the use of the laser cutter/engraver, vinyl cutter, 3D printers and scanner. There is a strong emphasis on working safely in the workshop setting.

CLOTH TO CATWALK (SEMESTER 1)

In Cloth to Catwalk, you will draw your own repeat pattern on paper and manipulate in Photoshop which will be transferred to fabric by a digital printing company. You will design and illustrate a small fashion range inspired by your own surface pattern design and use your printed fabric to construct a simple garment or accessory. You will learn about the concepts behind ‘haute couture’ fashion and how fashion designers and the clothing industry operate, from small fashion-houses to large factories.

CONTEMPORARY TEXTILES (SEMESTER 2)

From hand-stitching to rug-tufting, Contemporary Textiles will explore techniques used by Textile Artists around the world. You will learn how to applique using heat-activated adhesive, sew your own ‘lace’ using free-hand machine embroidery, transfer paintings onto fabric using dispersal dyes, learn how to make a rug using tufting guns, and experiment with dyeing techniques using procion dyes. Using a variety of these techniques you will design and create an artwork for your wall or an accessory that you can wear.
