Victorian Careers Show:
On Friday the 19th May, the Year 10s had the opportunity to visit the Victorian Careers Show. Students explored exhibitor stalls from various organisations, TAFEs and Universities and had the opportunity to attend seminars throughout the day. The students enjoyed meeting new people and making connections with further education and potential employers. They even got to say hello to their former teacher, Tahnee at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority Stand! As a special treat, there was a sneaky McDonalds visit on the way home! It was a great day out!
Cooking Skills:
Year 10 students have again been enjoying cooking sessions with Russell our VET teacher. Students have been cooking foods from a range of cultural backgrounds and learning about a variety of cooking processes. They have been cooking up a storm including handmade gnocchi and pasta sauce, scones, pizza and spanakopita. The best part of cooking sessions is eating the results of their labour! Doing the dishes afterwards... not so much!
Whittlesea Technical School Entrepreneurship Program:
Year 10 Students began their journey participating in the Whittlesea Technical School Entrepreneurship Program. The first day on Monday the 29th May, involved students brainstorming different business
ideas. The students also had an opportunity to create their own t-shirt design, using the software program Canva and explore the use of another program called Tinker CAD. Students then enjoyed practising printing their designs onto fabric, in preparation for creating their own t-shirt print. Students have attended another session on Monday 2nd June and will conclude their participation and involvement for this term on Monday 19th June.
Healthy Relationships & Wellbeing Programs:
Students have had a busy term so far focusing on health and wellbeing through numerous incursions. The focus has been on healthy and respectful relationships, sexual health and party safe behaviours. Students have explored ways in which to look after themselves and others, whilst being assertive and learning about keeping everyone safe as well as being provided with factual information to assist with their problem solving skills in these areas.
Year 11 Students have had a successful and engaging term 2.
Students have been able to stay focused in class and engage in social cohesion activities throughout the term. They took part in the Fit to Drive incursion where they were given the opportunity to take part in several workshops, which provided them with the expert advice on how to be safe on Victorian roads. Students also took part in a number of activities to help support IDAHOBIT day and Reconciliation week, these activities demonstrated the social connectedness and respect amongst the staff and students within the college.
Year 12 students have had a busy term to date, focusing on completing work and outcomes across all subject areas. Earlier in the term, students engaged in the WheelTalk incursion - an interactive program that encourages students to think about diversity, acceptance and disability with a primary focus on inclusion. Students heard from Peter who spoke about their lived experience of having a disability and how resilience has allowed him to make the most out of life. Peter lost the use of his legs at a very young age and discussed perseverance and how he manages life in a wheelchair. Students were then given the opportunity to play with sport wheelchairs, racing and playing basketball.
Students have also been busy planning Personal Development Skills projects for themselves and the school community. Students in 12A spent time planning, developing and facilitating activities for the school such as a Table Tennis competition, Yoga, a Treasure Hunt activity and Dodgeball to raise awareness of Jeans for Genes Foundation. These activities were a huge success with most of the school choosing to engage and participate in these organised programs and appearing to thoroughly enjoy them. In addition to this 12B students explored the impact of technology on physical, social and emotional wellbeing and also created their own wellness journals to explore ways in which we can reflect on daily progress and success.
During Semester 1, there were multiple catch-up sessions held either at lunch time or after school and these will continue to be offered, however students are urged to ensure they remain up to date and take up these opportunities for further support as they are made available. Looking ahead, year 12 students are more than halfway through their last year at PLSC and have moved into their last semester of work. All students are encouraged to continue to attend to ensure they are able to receive subject area instructions and commence/conclude learning tasks and assessments in a timely manner.
