5-8 Community News

Dear Families/Caregivers,
On behalf of the 5-8 staff, thank you for taking the time to attend our subject-teacher conversations. We take these conversations as an opportunity to discuss your child's learning but we also value the chance to have the check-in with you about your child and their progression at and outside of school.
The Resilience Project content and language continue to provide our students with opportunities to practice gratitude at home and at school. This comes at a wonderful time as it has provided students with the chance to reflect on their achievements and events that occurred in the first part of the year.
These visuals below, provide you with an understanding of what's occurred in the TA learning spaces for the past fortnight. Students have been unpacking the positives and negatives associated with emoji messages. We hope the students can continue to use some of these tools as they use their own devices.
From a SOLE perspective, we are unpacking the strategies we can use to manage those distractions around our learning spaces, especially devices, or peers who make us laugh at the incorrect time! This can be really difficult, so knowing what these strategies are and then using them, can really go a long way to improving focus.
Our basketball competition on a Monday has kicked off again in the Brigidine Centre. We have over 40 students participating in lunchtime activities. This is a wonderful achievement but it also shows how much our kids not only value sport, but the opportunity to play team-based sports with their class peers. It's been so good to see so many kids, take that step and commit to an activity, even though we are blessed to have a variety of new spaces in the yard. The soccer goals! WOW! and the use of the Rec Reserve! Tech Club is occurring each Wednesday in the partnerships space and the library is open for some quieter activities!
Keep it up guys!
Lastly, please continue to ensure that if your child is out of uniform, a note is provided to their TA teacher. As we welcome the colder months, please ensure that you are taking a trip down to the uniform shop in Kyabram to purchase a school jumper or jacket. College beanies and scarves are now available to purchase from the College Office.

Year 7 and 8 Outdoor Ed Canoeing Experience
During Week 2 of this term, the Years 7 and 8 Outdoor Education elective students went canoeing along the Goulburn River. We left from Yambuna Bridge which was built in 1956 and has seen many floods, with 2022’s flood placing it and bushland surrounding it, underwater. Barry from River Country Adventures was our instructor and started with a quick introduction on how to paddle and where to place our hands. We then paired up and got out on the water. We paddled upstream along the Lower Goulburn River for approx 2km. The current was very slow with water levels currently low so it was ideal conditions to practise our paddling skills and take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding bushland.
FEAST in Years 7 and 8 Food Technology
Did you know that in Australia, we waste 7.6 million tonnes of food each year, costing our economy $36.6 billion? A staggering 2.5 million tonnes of food waste comes directly from our homes, this is equal to 312kg per person. Food waste refers to any food that could have been eaten by people that is wasted or thrown away.
This term, students in Years 7 and 8 Food Technology will be participating in a unit of inquiry developed by Ozharvest to develop their skills and confidence to use commonly wasted foods. The FEAST program educates students about healthy eating, food waste prevention, and the vital role we can play in protecting our planet and creating a sustainable future. Students will prepare a range of dishes that use foods that are often thrown out. They will work as a team to design their own recipe which considers possible solutions to the challenge of food waste.
