Last week, staff were fortunate to be part of a ‘local career and labour market insights’ workshop facilitated by Lee Sunlay and Steve Shephard from TwoPointZero.

The capacity building initiative, driven and funded by Industry Training Hub – Shepparton in partnership with TwoPointZero, is one of many being delivered to various regional schools. These workshops have been designed to build knowledge to enable teachers and various staff in schools to have stronger conversations with our young people around careers and local labour market opportunities. These conversations help to  build their knowledge of post-school vocational pathways, key emerging and growth industries and skills, local jobs and opportunities in demand.

Through the workshop, we explored future skills, top growth industries and what local employers look for in employees. The session provided staff an opportunity to  brainstorm ideas and activities to embed careers content into classroom lessons and to link learning with the world of work.

An interesting part of the session was looking at research that was conducted by the Business Council of Australia. This shows that Australian businesses assess school leavers on the demonstration of a combination of their values, their behaviours and their skills. The skills, values and behaviours are listed below.

Two Point Zero then surveyed a range of local employers across the Greater Shepparton region and Shire of Campaspe and asked what they look for from school leavers and entry level employees. The response from most businesses are listed below.

We would like to acknowledge Kristen Elliot from Industry Training Hubs for supporting this initiative. We are looking forward to the follow up session in June.

This focus on staff being informed of the trends and requirements in various careers and pathways links in well with the opportunities presented to the 9-12 students over Term 2.

Our Years 9 and 12 cohorts have already had the chance to explore the wide range of career pathways that exist in their visits to Careers expos in Shepparton and Melbourne. Similarly, our Year 11s are visiting the Victorian Careers Show today and the Year 10 group will make their way to the Tomorrow Bound Careers day in Bendigo next Thursday, 25th May.

All of these events link perfectly with the Senior Secondary Pathways and Subject Selection information session which will be held in the Brigidine Centre next Wednesday, 24th May. All Years 8, 9 and 10 students and families/caregivers are invited to attend this session, where the various pathways - VCE, VCE-VM, VET and subjects - 9/10 Electives and VCE subjects, and the subject selection process will be outlined. Students and parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to meet and speak with our Learning Leaders across all subject areas and VET providers from across the district. We encourage all students and families to attend this event to take advantage of the opportunity to discuss pathways and subjects as they enter the 2024 subject selection phase.
