Secretary of Education's Senior Leaders visit

On Monday 7th November, 5 Senior Leaders who work with the Secretary of Education, Georgina Harrisson toured our school and spoke with both students and staff to learn more about our specialist setting. Our visitors were:

  • Shaun Ruming, Chief People Officer
  • Simone Walker, Group Deputy Secretary
  • Leanne Nixon, Deputy Secretary School Performance North
  • Ruth Owen, Deputy Secretary, Chief Operating Officer
  • Erin Giuliani, A/Executive Director, Communications and Engagement

Our Executive Director, Dean White accompanied the group and even enjoyed a game with the students and Mr Wong-See during maths groups. We received wonderful feedback about our school and I was so proud to showcase the important work we do to support our students.

NAIDOC celebrations

Orange celebrated NAIDOC week during week 4. 19 students attended the official opening at the Orange Function Centre on Monday 31 October. Arky Bennett and Tiahna Munday were selected by the NAIDOC committee to represent public schools as flag bearers in the formal opening of Orange Community NAIDOC Week.

Each stage engaged in different activities throughout the week, notably, Primary attended The Orange Regional Gallery 'First Nations Engagement Day'; Stage 4 participated in Indigenous games; Stage 5 completed an artwork and participated in an Aboriginal identity scavenger hunt around the school; Stage 6 created a Hall of Fame in the corridor and completed an artwork; Campus had a BBQ, games and connections day.

Our NAIDOC whole school assembly was held on Friday 11 November. It was a fantastic celebration of student success and culture. School Captain, Nathaniel McMillan led the assembly professionally and with pride. We started the afternoon by hosting members of the Aboriginal community, including elders to an afternoon tea, before we headed into the hall for the formalities. Nathaniel acknowledged Country before Gerald Power, Orange Deputy Mayor made a heartfelt speech about how we can all Get Up!, Stand Up! and Show Up! He has a strong personal connection to our school and we all felt his passion. Steve and Chris from Dinawan's Connection then performed some dances with student and staff volunteers. We loved seeing the emu chicks and kangaroo's moving around the stage! Each stage showcased what they did and learned during NAIDOC week and Mrs Steer told us about the Young Archie's and the amazing artworks that were produced using this year's NAIDOC theme. Thank you to Miss Krissie for assisting in the organisation of our NAIDOC celebrations; Class 19 girls for making gift bags; and to Mrs Huggett for producing beautiful artworks as gifts to our special guests.

We were fortunate to have Steve from  Dinawan’s Connection, Cowra workshop with our students on Friday 11 November. Dinawan’s Connection aim to share traditional Aboriginal dance and culture with everyone and empower the youth through mentoring. They share the old ways, connecting to Country with respect through dance and stories.
