GERMAN FILM COMPETITION WINNERS

Lights, cameras, action!! Let’s make an Internet/TV advertisement auf Deutsch

Each year students in Year 9 German learn how to talk about TV and to use terms associated with film-making. Each year the Association of German Teachers of Victoria runs a competition for students, where they have to make a 1-minute promotional video that promotes a product or idea or thing – a new topic is set each year.

Our Year 9 students plan and make an advertisement in the German language, and this task forms a learning task in Semester Two at McKinnon SC.

The set topic for 2022 was “Entspannt euch!” [‘relax!’] – this slogan was to be incorporated in a promotional video that highlights a travel destination in one of the German-speaking countries. Student groups developed ads promoting destinations such as the Rheinfall waterfall in Switzerland, the night market of Hamburg, hiking in the Swiss Alps, the ski resort of Oberstdorf in south-western Germany, the lake Hallstättersee in Austria, the Baltic Sea Island of Rügen, the Europapark theme park in Germany, and the city of Vienna, in Austria.

Each school can send four videos to the AGTV competition. We were thrilled with the results when they were published – the ad for the island of Rügen was awarded 2nd Prize (created by Sophie Butler, Christina Tan and Ava Muelu, seen left-to-right in the photo), and the ad for the Europapark was awarded 3rd Prize (created by Cristian Karavendzas, Tom Merry and Igor PasichnyukFelix Dinkelmeyer was absent from the photo)!

Well done to those students and to all the students of Year 9 German, who produced creative promotional videos.

Looking forward to the efforts of next year’s Year 9 students!

GERMAN SCHOLARSHIP (SAGSE) - HOSTING A GERMAN STUDENT IN AUSTRALIA

You may know that a McKinnon student of German (Louisa D’Ambra, Year 12) received the prestigious Society for German-Australian scholarship to travel to Germany for ten weeks. Being awarded the scholarship is a reflection on the efforts in studying German throughout the high school years.

The SAGSE organisation (Scholarship of Australian German Student Exchange) is offering scholarships to students of Years 11 and 12 to Germany. Since this exchange is not a reciprocal one, they are looking for host families who are willing to have a German student in their home for ten weeks in Term 2.

Hosting a student will advance interested students to the second part of the application process to participate in the German Exchange which is the interview stage. Even if students do not wish to participate in an exchange, the benefits of having a German speaking person in the house are immense.

If you are interested in hosting a student or want to inquire about the SAGSE programme, please feel free to talk to the MCK Languages Department to discuss this further.

YEAR 7 WEIHNACHTSFEST

Year 7 German classes researched German traditions, Christmas recipes and made decorations for the festive season. They all wrote a German Christmas card for a classmate and presented it in the last lesson this year. Students celebrated with a Sing along and the food they had prepared for the Weihnachtsfest.

Well done to all Year 7 German classes! Frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes, neues Jahr!
