Grade 5/6

Migration

The grade 56 students have had the opportunity to listen to two very different stories of migration as part of our study on Migration.

Pauline shared with us about her life with her family in Ireland where she grew up.  She explained what the farm she grew up on was like and her friends that she had. She then talked about how she decided to complete further study here in Australia and look for love. She told us that she has loved living in Australia and how much she loves it here but there were are also hard parts of being so far away from her family and her best friend.

Eh Ler Bwe Taw had a very different story of migration. He shared with the students about his life in Burma/Myanmar that is involved in Civil War. His family - with 6 children was constantly moving through the jungle to try and be safe. Their precious possessions were a cooking pot and machete. His family ended up living in a refugee camp on the Thai boarder. The refugee camp was built as a temporary home so it did not have great infrastructures in place (it is still a refugee camp 14 years later). Eh Ler Bwe Taw and his family got the opportunity to come to Australia which was very daunting as they had hardly been in cars or even seen an aeroplane.

Both our guest said that they are very glad they live in Australia despite the different ways that they came to get here.

The grade 56 students have been able to make connections with the text we are reading in class - Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzmann. We have also looked at Anh Doh's life. All the grade 56 students for homework are interviewing someone who has migrated to Australia. We are looking forward to hearing more stories next week.
