Assistant Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week I had the pleasure of accompanying one of our student leaders, Chloe Paas to the Rowville Secondary College Presentation Night. The Barry Plant Rowville Scholarship acknowledges and rewards Year 6 students who have displayed outstanding excellence in academic studies, leadership, community service, performing arts and/or sports.

This scholarship aims to encourage further learning and development in these areas, with each recipient receiving a contribution towards their Year 7 learning journey. Chloe was selected for her commitment to her Vice School Captain leadership role, her initiative and organisational skills, upholding our school values on a daily basis and persevering to grow herself as a learner to achieve her learning goals. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement Chloe.

Last week, our students in Foundation to Year 6 received the results of this year’s Maths Talent Quest. The Maths Talent Quest is an annual competition run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria that encourages students to independently carry out real world mathematical investigations on their own, with a small group or with a class. Students chose their own topics, designed their investigations, developed research questions, collected and analysed information and data and drew conclusions which informed action with minimal teacher assistance. This year, over 230 of our students worked on completing a real-life mathematics investigation for the Rowville Primary School MTQ! Some of these were then chosen to represent Rowville Primary School at a state level against other schools in Victoria.

It is so great to see so many of our students feeling excited and passionate about mathematics. Although the MTQ is all about challenging themselves with mathematics, students also learn to work collaboratively with their peers, they must be adaptable and persistent when their investigation is not panning out as expected, they must be flexible thinkers and problem solvers to generate new ideas and they must develop their reasoning skills so that they can give evidence to support their thinking in their investigations. Students must also communicate their ideas, research and report findings effectively in a presentation that showcases all their learning.

Students have undertaken these investigations with focus and dedication and produced their very best. A big thank you to Mrs Coveney for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students to continue to grow as mathematicians. Congratulations to all our students who participated this year and well done to these students who have all achieved excellent results at the state level:
