Junior School News Term 4

Congratulations to our Year 3-6 Interschool team who competed in the NIJSSA Athletics Carnival on Friday last week. Despite having to cancel our own school carnival, our students gave their very best effort in the various events. I commend all of the students on their effort, and also on the way they presented as great ambassadors for our school. The team spirit, sportsmanship and positive attitude was clearly evident throughout the day. Well done team. LCS came third in the overall results, with Scotch Oakburn Junior School 1st, and Sacred Heart School 2nd.

There will be some staff changes for 2023 in the Junior School. We will farewell Mrs. Jess Guest. Mr Terry Lake and Mrs. Sandy Shand will be teaching in the Middle School. We welcome Mr Phill van Ryn, Mr Anton Walton, Mrs Elizabeth Lovelock and Mrs Rebecca Coles to our teaching team for 2023.We are very thankful to God for the provision of staff for 2023. We are very aware that staffing is very challenging for many schools at present, so we are certainly very blessed to have been able to secure these teaching positions. Further details of the staffing plans  for the Junior School in 2023 are available on the Hub Junior School page.

We have also been blessed with a number of new families enrolling at LCS for 2023. We are expecting 347 students in the Junior School at this stage for 2023. There will be an orientation day for new students to spend a full day at school with their peers on December 12. This will correlate with the “Meet the Teacher” session on that same day, when class lists for 2023 will be made available for parents. End of Year reports will be published on that same day.

Our End of Year celebrations are fast approaching. Our End of Year assembly celebrations are planned as follows, with parents welcome to attend.

  • Junior School Celebration at Riverbank Christian Church Tuesday December 6 between 9.30-10.30
  • Year 6 Graduation Assembly in the Performing Arts Centre December 15 between 9.30-10.30
  • Junior School Christmas Celebration at Riverbank Christian Church Tuesday December 13 between 9.30-10.30

We are very thankful to God for His many blessings in the Junior School in 2022.

TRJ Service Challenge

During the last two weeks of term 3, our Rite Journey students planned an act of service for different parts of the LCS community. Twelve groups were given a budget of $50 to bless a targeted group in our community. They planned, prepared, shopped, baked, sent emails, and filled out risk assessments in the lead-up to the final Thursday of term when each group performed their act of service.

There was a range of activities performed for a range of people. Many primary students were blessed throughout the week, with year 9 students leading craft, sport, a footy clinic, obstacle courses, a water slide, making fairy bread, cookies and care packs for cleaners, bus drivers and selected teachers. Overall, this was a great example of faith in action, of service that is inspired by the things we love, as it is written in Proverbs, “above all, guard your heart, because everything you do flows from it.” (Prov. 4:23).

Science Award

Congratulations to Elizabeth Sexton, Esther Sharpe and Vaidehi Oommen who have recently been awarded Best UTAS Research Science Investigation out of all our year 9 Advanced Science class. UTAS judges recently visited our year 9 cohort to inspect their presentations and were impressed with our student's endeavours. Riley Bosveld, Josiah Hargrave and Ethan Lock received a merit award for their research into the effect of various frequencies of light on plant growth.

Curious Minds

Congratulations to Elizabeth Sexton and Esther Sharpe who have both won a spot in the Curious Minds, STEM program for girls. Entry into this program involves a gruelling round of Science, Maths and Computing Olympiad exams and the top female performers from each state are then chosen to take part in the Curious Minds Program over the ensuing year. The Curious Minds Program is a STEM program for girls that involves 6 months of mentoring by a Science professional. A professional Scientist from the students state is preferably chosen to mentor each girl. During this 6 month program, the girls will also take part in a virtual camp in Term 4 and then a residential camp at the Australian National University for 5 days in June 2023. They will also undertake work experience in the field of science and embark in a research project with their mentor, which will be presented at the end of the program. We wish Elizabeth and Esther all the best in their program.

Note for the office

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not in correct uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.
