9-12 Community News

Life continues to be very busy in the 9-12 Community.

Fourteen students from Years 9-12 travelled to Dookie College last Friday, to participate in the annual Food and Fibre Careers Day. The day included a talk from Warwick Long, of ABC's ‘The Country Hour’, a huge range of hands-on workshops and a farm skills relay challenge at lunch time. While the team didn't manage to take home any ribbons, the St Augustine’s team put in a terrific effort! Thanks, Mrs Challis and Claire, for taking the students to Dookie.

Rounding out the Careers program for the term, the Year 10s travelled to Bendigo last Thursday, for the Tomorrow Bound Careers Expo. As they turned their minds to the possibilities of their senior secondary years, the group took great interest in the career information and guidance provided by the many universities, training providers and employer group exhibitors.

The focus on career pathways through this term for students from Years 9-11 will come into further focus for students in the coming weeks. As we begin planning for 2023, students and families will be invited to consider their 2023 pathway and subject options when we present the Senior Pathways Information sessions on 16th June. Next year there are exciting changes happening to the VCE and VCAL curriculum model, with the VCAL program going through a name change to now be known as the VCE Vocational Major (VCE/VM). The VCE/VM will provide an enhanced vocational and applied learning curriculum model. Information on the new VCE/VM pathway, VCE subject offerings and the subject selection process for 2023, will be shared with students and their families at the Senior Pathways Information session.

This week saw the Year 12s head off to Valley Homestead, in Ovens, for their Retreat. While on Retreat, the Year 12s spent time reflecting on the people and experiences that have led them to this stage of their lives and discussed the place of faith and belief in their lives. As part of these reflections, the group developed their Creed, a pledge to themselves, their friends and families, the school and its community. We look forward to sharing the Creed with you in the coming weeks.

Success Integrated Presentation

Next Thursday, 9th June, Students in Years 9 and 10 will be participating in workshops presented by Success Integrated.

Year 9 students will be participating in the Program: Power to Persist

Power to Persist is a unique program designed to develop resilience and grit in students. Students that are equipped to deal with setbacks, disappointments and failure in a healthy way, are able to handle the pressures they face socially, academically and emotionally; both within and outside of school.

Research suggests that students with a growth mindset develop grit. After explaining neuroplasticity to students in this seminar, they begin to understand that their ‘brain is like a muscle’; it changes and grows when it’s worked and or challenged. This knowledge makes them far less likely to give up and persist even when they fail, because the more effort they put in, the better their outcomes.

Year 10 students will be participating in the Program: Pathways to Success. This seminar has been specifically designed to help students:

1. Identify and align their inner most desires to their talents and unique abilities;

2. Crystallise their dreams, set goals and develop a plan of action to achieve it;

3. Develop powerful strategies to become and stay motivated at will;

4. Boost their confidence and much, much more...

Later in the evening, parents are invited to attend a workshop and information session titled - ‘Road to Resilience’. This session will provide parents and caregivers with strategies to best support their children to develop a growth mindset and increase their love of learning while building your child’s resilience to help them adapt, grow and thrive. The last two years have provided many challenges and we hope that this session will give you strategies to assist you to raise your child’s self-belief and boost their confidence and social and emotional well being.  We look forward to seeing you all in attendance.

For catering purposes, please contact the office to reserve your place.
