From the Principal

Sorry Day Mass

Last week, St Augustine’s gathered as a College Community to reflect on our Reconciliation journey. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The theme of Reconciliation Week for 2022 is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’.

This is a challenge to us all to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all.

Change begins with brave actions in your daily life – where you live, work and play. Take action to Make Change with yourself, every day of the year, not just during National Reconciliation Week.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Indigenous peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part, we collectively build relationships and communities that value all people, histories, cultures and futures.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful change, future gains will continue to take your effort and understanding.

A powerful force is when Australians, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, come together to heal from pain and accept histories, believing that unity, love and care is greater than the energy generated by the anger of division and difference. It is those moments that can truly be described as the spirit of reconciliation.

Today, I challenge each of you to ‘Be Brave. Make Change’.

Uniform

I would like to draw your attention to the College Uniform policy that is clearly located on our website.  St Augustine’s College values a consistent approach to students wearing the College uniform. This promotes an environment which is inclusive and free from pressure to wear brand name or fashion attire. Wearing the College uniform ensures a common and respectable standard of dress which fosters belonging and pride in our College. The College uniform is ‘fit for purpose’ attire for all students in the College community and was agreed upon by the College Uniform Committee.

In recent weeks, there have been students who have failed to meet the uniform requirements and I respectfully request that you speak with your son/daughter to ensure that the correct uniform is worn with pride. The uniform guide can be found at https://sakyabram.ceosand.cspace.net.au/Assets/1295/SAC_UniformGuide.pdf

Class Cancellation

I am very grateful for your patience and understanding in regards to the classes being cancelled this week. It was an extremely difficult decision to make. The college is currently experiencing high levels of staff and student absences. These are mainly due to high levels of COVID transmission and a strain of influenza. Our teaching and casual relief staff have been covering these absences to date; however, this had become increasingly more difficult. I look forward to seeing all the students back at school next week.

Baby News

I am very pleased to announce that Mrs Breeanna Guerra has a new addition to her family. Ned Bryan Guerra was born on 23 May weighing 3.6kg (6.8lb). Both Bree and Ned are all doing well.

In addition, Mrs Amy Wheeler gave birth to Elsie Louise Dullard, on 22 May weighing 3.49kgs (7lbs 7ozs). I am pleased to say that Amy and Elsie are both doing well.

Fundraising for Cancer

I would like to acknowledge the amazing contribution of St Augustine's student Nate Schubach towards cancer research which was recently recognised in the My Volunteering Story exhibition.

At the age of 10, Nate and his cousin Mia grew and then shaved their hair to highlight the challenges faced by those with cancer. Nate and Mia fundraised $20,000 for a cancer support group.  What a remarkable effort.
