IDAHOBIT Day and Minus 18 Presentations

21% of Australian high school students identify as LGBTQIA+. Of this group, 75% will face bullying and harassment, much of it at school.

That's why we're recognising and celebrating our LGBTQIA+ community at Copperfield College by celebrating IDAHOBIT day.

To celebrate IDAHOBIT and PRIDE month, year 8s at Sydenham and year 9s at Kings Park attended a gender and sexuality workshop with Minus 18.

The presenters introduced students to the basics of LGBTQIA+ identities and concepts and shared their own relatable, personal stories. The workshops were designed to celebrate diversity and promote empathy and respect amongst students. It also explored ways students can take action safely to support their peers.

Headspace Workshop

On Monday June 6th and Tuesday June 7th Sydenham Junior Campus welcomed Candiece Tappin from Headspace Schools to present to our year 7 and 8 students on the topic of ‘Standing Strong – Bullying and Mental health’. We are also fortunate enough to have Candiece deliver an online parent/carer information session called "Supporting young people: notice, ask, connect” information session via  Zoom on Tuesday 7th June.

We were pleased to hear lots of positive feedback from students who mentioned that the presentation helped them to better recognise anxiety in their body and how to be an up-stander if they are witness to bullying behaviour. Students also reported feeling more confident accessing additional support networks (such as Headspace etc) if they require additional support outside of school hours.
