Chemistry in the Kitchen

This unit of work focuses on the chemical changes that take place everyday in kitchens around the world, with students exploring the how and why behind them. To help students with this, in SCIMAT this week, the Year 8 students have had the opportunity to make their own ice cream with a twist. Instead of using the traditional means, students have been using Dry Ice as a way of speeding up the reactions that take place, allowing them to make the ice cream in a fraction of the time.

The Material World

Each term a group of Year 7 students undertake the PBL subject of ‘The Material World.’ In this class students explore the various elements of nature and complete a series of tasks which aim to provide them with the inspiration needed to create their own stuffed toy.

In one of the activities, students create a ‘mood board’ for which students gather images which have a common theme to express an idea or feeling. Can you figure out what the Year 7s were thinking about from their creations below?

Year 10 Textiles

With the new semester underway, Year 10 Textiles Class is up and running. Students will be exploring the various aspects of design, including a design brief, safety requirements and, of course, production. These particular Year 10 students are exploring garment modification.
