Welcome back to Term 3

Welcome

Dear families, welcome back to Term 3. We have an exciting term ahead of us with lots of great activities such as circus skills, science week and maths morning. Please make sure you keep an eye on seesaw and the newsletter for details on upcoming events.

Mathematics

This term we have started by focusing on fractions. The children have been exploring fractions such as halves, quarters, thirds and that fraction must be divided into equal parts. We started by cutting lots of different shapes into these fractions and then focused of breaking groups of objects up into fractions.

We then imagined going on a picnic, where the food had not been cut up. Students had to make the food from playdough or use pictures of the food and with lots on trial and error cut the foods to feed different amounts of people. Some people cut halves ( 2 people) others quarters (4 people) and some event tried thirds (3 people), fifths (5 people) and tenths (10 people).

The students also had the opportunity to explore the concept that they had been given a piece of food and told that it had been cut into quarters prior to them receiving their piece. Students had to imagine and draw what they thought the whole piece would have looked like prior to it being cut up.

Literacy

After watching many different versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood, this term the students have begun to plan and write their own version of the fairytale. Students explored and discussed characters, problems and solutions that might occur in their story.

Students also focused on adjectives that could be used to describe their characters, setting or events. From this piece of writing we will work together to set a personal writing goal for each student and focus on this goal each time we write.

Here are some of the sizzling starts the children have written.

Zoom, went Little Red Riding Hood in her space Lamborghini. - Liam L

Splash went Little Red Riding Hood into the deep water. - Dusty

Once upon a time at a school that was very small there was a big bad wolf. -Ema

Bang went Little Red Riding Hood as she bumped into a scary bear.  -Joanah

Kaboom Sports

On Wednesday the children participated in Kaboom sports morning. The children were split up into different country teams and went to the basketball courts to enjoy a fulfilled morning. The students completed rotational sport activities with a focus on participation, trying their best and encouraging each other. They all had a fantastic time and learnt such great new skills. Here are some of the students enjoying throwing, catching, kicking and team building activities.
