LITERACY

Over the last two weeks we have focussed on Endings with Impact (or Exciting Endings). The students have enjoyed working with their peers to write the final scene of a story or movie. We also started looking at Performance Poetry and Slam Poetry as a way of having an impact on the audience. Beginning with Alliteration, then moving on to Rhyme and Rhythm to understand how different words and emphasis can change the way the audience engages with the poem to create impact. We started by identifying as many different nouns, verbs and adjectives beginning with the same sound, then used those words to alliterate a sentence or two. Here are some great examples:

MATHS

The focus in mathematics has been Location, in particular map reading. We have begun to recognise all of the elements seen on Maps using the acronym BOLSS (Border, Orientation, Legend, Scale and Source). The students have engaged in a range of activities to develop their directional language and mapping skills. We've created maps of our own, used maps to create a list of directions to guide someone along a particular path and understood how scale is used to measure distances.

LITTLE DEVILS CIRCUS

Every Friday the students' have an opportunity to learn some new circus skills. Last week we were introduced to Hayden, from Little Devils, who showed us some basic moves with some of the equipment we'll begin to master along the way to our end of term performance. It seems we already have some budding performers with the Devil Sticks and the Juggling Balls. Once we've had a go at all of them, our class will be selected to master just one and the students will have the opportunity to take items home to practise with.

Inquiry

This term we will be looking at Social Justice with a focus on organisations that support;

  1. the fight against Poverty,
  2. equal access to Education and combating Illiteracy,
  3. the supply of food to support Nutrition, and
  4. the provision of Sanitation to reduce the risk of disease.

Students will recognise that we are all members of a global community, and as such, we have a responsibility to help out where and whenever we can. We began by looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We considered what these rights may be, who makes sure these rights are being protected, where may they not be being met, how organisations and people help children around the world.

Homework

A more formal approach to homework is being implemented this term, with students now bringing home spelling words each week and specific tasks being assigned on Matific. These should be completed in addition to nightly reading and number facts practise that students. Please support your child to complete these on a regular basis in order to be ready for the routine required in secondary school.
