Victorian Primary School
Golf Tournament
Leo S (Yr 2) & Ben F (Yr 5) both represented St James last Friday at Woodlands in the Victorian Primary School Golf Tournament. Both boys were part of a group of 13 to qualify to the Regionals in November at Keysborough. Their exceptional performance & attitude was well noted on the day. We are all very proud of them.
Leo's Dad, Jason, has painted a snapshot of the day:
We managed a very quick practice last Saturday at Sandy D/range, and after school chip and put on Tuesday at Brighton, as a lead to today's Tournament.
We woke to strong blustery Northerley winds..but the sun was out. Pa met us on the practice green.
This year we were playing the back 9 and starting on the par 5 300m 18th with the wind.
Ben- now Year 5 from St.James played 2 yrs ago- was nowhere to be seen as we left the t off to hit our 2nd shots...with Jonathan and Alex from Dingley Primary.
After our 2nd shots we were forced to wait as the group in front were still putting out...alas Ben arrives. ..races back to the T and smashes his ball next to Leo's.
Leo starts with an 8...over hitting 3 puts.
A stiff head wind greets us as we walk 10th searching for our T off. He's driving the ball well and misses his 6ft par putt but sinks his next for a boggie.
Par 3 11th he's on in 2 and looking at another 6ft par...the greens are fast and he's not reading the speed. Another boggie.
The next 5 holes, his scores vary from 6 to 9...can't fault his drives and fairway rescue..his chipping and putting on the fast greens are hurting his score.
We come to the 17th...elevated Par 3. We have a plan...7 iron to the opening, chip on and put out.....hmmm after 2 shots and on the fringe we promise leo a red lemonade and bowl of chips if he can get it in for 2.....it worked...
He finished with 57...Ben played very well and both boys left minimum 5 shots around the greens.
We said goodbye to Pa - he broke a tooth at the 12th on a chewy lolly- as we headed into the clubhouse and he to the dentist.
I was surprised and incredibly proud as his name was read out as the last (13th) qualifier.
We now head to Keysborough in November, hopefully with more practice under our belt.
Olympic Fever at Home
The Olympics have arrived in Brighton!
