What's happening in the classrooms

As our Startup Weeks have now concluded, the Junior School has returned to its usual classroom routine of Literacy, SEL (Social and Emotional Learning), Maths, Inquiry and RE (Religious Education).

We have hit the ground running, starting off each day with PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) and Music. During PMP students have been building their coordination, gross motor skills and teamwork, whilst in Music, they have been developing their fine motor skills, listening skills and creativity. Throughout Music, they have also been revising their letters and sounds through a series of songs, chants and rhymes.

In Literacy, the Junior School has been focusing on phonics, reading and writing. The students have been learning and revising letters and sounds through hands-on activities including building letters from playdough, building words with magnetic letters and tracing patterns. Students from Prep-2 have also been focusing on Recounts, by learning to retell their experiences through both pictures and words.

In Maths, we have been learning all about location. This has included directions such as up, down, left and right. Students created their own mazes and were required to say the directions to travel from the start to the finish. We have also been learning about counting and developing an understanding of 'how many’ a number represents.

The Junior School is investigating the following question in Inquiry: “How does helping others make a healthy, happy community?” This links to our Religious Education big question: “How do I belong to the family of God?” Students have been exploring the meaning of ‘community’ and learning to ask thick and thin questions about different groups such as our family, our school, our Church and our neighbourhood.

The Holy Family HEART values underpin everything we do. During our daily SEL sessions, students have been learning ways to have a ‘growth mindset’ and think positively when faced with challenges. The Junior School created conscious breathing rainbows as a reminder of how we practise conscious breathing to become calm, centred and grounded.

We are excited to see where our learning journey will lead us next!
