Classroom Helpers

It has been wonderful to have classroom helpers back in the school this week, supporting students with their reading. Today Learning Specialist, Paul Brock and I presented to the school community about our Classroom Helpers Training and how you can help your child with reading.  It was great to have so many families come along.

If you would like a copy of our presentation please email me at amy.prior@education.vic.gov.au and I can send it through to you.

In Our Classrooms

This week in Prep, our students have been learning all about the letter a and sound /a/. The students have been practising their handwriting and they completed a scavenger hunt around their classrooms to find lots of things that have the /a/ sound.

Our Junior School students have been generating lots of new ideas for writing. Their Writer’s Notebooks are now full of seeds (ideas) of what they can write about.

In the Middle School our students have been making connections when reading. When students make connections to the texts that they are reading, it helps them to make sense of what they read, retain the information better, and engage more with the text itself.

Senior School students have been busy planning their Hero’s Journey Writing pieces where they are investigating the structure of narrative writing and the roles that a hero character can play. The Hero's Journey is a great technique for analysing all kinds of stories--whether they be myths, legends, films, novels, short stories, plays, or even comic books.  Educating students about the Hero's Journey encourages them to think about plot structure, character motivation, and theme.
