Call for School Council Nominations

Each year Victorian Government schools are required to formally call for nominations for members of the School Council. Croydon Hills Primary School’s School Council consists of eight elected parents, four staff positions, the Department Nominee (the Principal) and the option of two Co-opted Positions.

Elected members stand for two year terms with the option of then nominating for further terms.

This year we have:

  • five vacancies in the Parent Member Category
  • two vacancies in the DET Employee Category

The two co-opted members will be determined at the School Council AGM on Wednesday 17th March. In the past these positions have been filled by a representative from the parent community, Croydon Hills Parents Association (CHAPS) or Men of the Hills (MOTHS).

Nomination forms may be obtained from the school office and must be lodged by 4.00 pm on Thursday 4th March 2021. If the number of nominations exceeds the number of positions a ballot will be conducted, closing on Friday 12th March 2021. If the number of nominations is less than the number of vacancies, a notice to that effect will be distributed calling for further nominations.

What’s happening this week at our school

Groundsman Kim has been busy renovating our front garden. In the coming term we expect our basketball towers to be installed, lines marked in our northern staff carpark, synthetic grass installed in and around the Gaga Pit and the farm to be redeveloped.

Engaging in the community

As I’ve shared on many occasions, our school highly values our partnership with our parents and carers. This week has seen a hive of activity:

  • CHAPS had their first meeting of the year with over 20 community members joining the committee.  Well done, many hands make light work and with that comes great opportunities for our students!
  • MOTHS also had their first meeting of the year.  The group, inspired by The Fathering Project, set out their calendar of events for the year.  Their first event is this Friday with a Pizza and Paper Plane evening on the oval, 6:00pm – 7:15pm.  The Pizza is FREE!  Click HERE if you’re coming to order your favourite slices!
  • Please Tell Me About Your Child (Parent – Teacher) meetings were highly successful, with dialogue from the home and school creating a greater understanding about the needs of each of our individual students.  Thank you to all of our teachers who put in additional hours away from their own lives and families.
  • Today more than thirty parents attended the Parent Helpers Training in the Library (See Amy’s article for more information). NB:  If you haven’t completed the training and would like to be a classroom helper please contact Amy.Prior@education.vic.gov.au to understand our phonics approach to reading.

Smart Watches – please deactivate

There have been an increasing number of smart devices coming to school since the start of the year, and even some instances of students and parents contacting each other during school time.  Our policy with all smart devices is that personal mobile devices must be handed to the office at the beginning of the day, and returned to students at 3:30pm.

This includes smart watches.  Smart watches are allowed, but only for telling the time.  All other functions must be deactivated.  If Smart Watches are used by students for other functions during class time, they will be confiscated and returned to students at 3:30pm. Additionally, if students choose to bring smart devices to school, it is at their own risk.
