Performing Arts - Term 1
Hello, I am Mr Clark, your Performing Arts teacher in 2021! This year, I am full of excitement and anticipation for a year filled with confidence and respectful collaboration through Drama and Dance. Being a GWPS Production year, there will be numerous opportunities for learners to build and showcase their talents both behind the curtains and centre-stage. Here’s looking forward to a wonderful first term.
Foundation
Learning Intention: To develop characters that share ideas and stories
Students will focus on identifying and expressing emotion. They will watch short clips and discuss how emotion was portrayed by characters in terms of voice, expression and gesture. They will use these ideas to develop and portray their own characters within simple narratives.
Year 1
Learning Intention: To perform by showing role, situation and focus through physical movement
Students will focus on mime. They will explore how ideas can be portrayed through facial expressions, gestures, body language and space. Students will view and discuss different examples of mime and apply this knowledge to improvise different characters, objects and ideas both individually and collaboratively.
Year 2
Learning Intention: To perform by showing role, situation and focus through physical movement

Year 3
Learning Intention: To develop engaging roles and situations through collaborative rehearsal
Students will view a variety of performance scripts, discussing their dramatic elements. They will use this knowledge to begin rehearsing voice and movement skills. The students will work collaboratively to block, rehearse and reflect on short collaborative scenes.
Year 4
Learning Intention: To develop meaningful adapted drama works through collaboration
Students will use a variety of performances as a talking prompt in order to analyse meaning and purpose. They will use this knowledge to create adapted texts that meet a personal or cultural need. The students will reflect on their performances and the performances of others by discussing the elements of drama demonstrated.
Year 5
Learning Intention: To shape character, voice and movement through improvised performance
Students will be asked to identify the purpose of performances and how different artists engage and entertain their audience. Students will be given the opportunity to engage in improvisation in order to shape character, mood and focus. Students will create entertaining narratives and express ideas collaboratively through improvisation games involving empathy and listening skills.
Year 6
Learning Intention: To shape character, voice and movement through improvised performance
Students will be asked to identify the purpose of performances and how different artists engage and entertain their audience. Students will be given the opportunity to engage in improvisation in order to shape character, mood and focus. Students will use improvisation and artistic reflection to further develop characters and situations.
