Physical Education - Term 1
Term 1 is a fast-paced time of year within Health and Physical Education with many exciting events scheduled including the Twilight Sports - a highlight for our school community - and a six-day intensive swimming program for all students at Swim World. The years 4-6 students will participate in the intra-school Athletics Day which leads into the inter-school competition later in the term, as well as the Syndal District Summer Sport Round Robin for all year 6’s.
Foundation/Prep
LI - To establish a respectful learning community in Physical Education
Students will discuss what it means to be respectful in Physical Education. They will develop their understanding of expectations and how to establish and maintain a respectful learning community where everybody feels confident and comfortable to express themselves.
LI – To perform movement patterns showing control and balance while also displaying spatial awareness
Students will participate in learning tasks which encourage the use of movement patterns within defined areas. Spatial awareness will be required for students to successfully navigate around others inside the designated playing area.
LI - To demonstrate an understanding of the movement sequences when performing throwing/rolling and catching
Students begin to develop the correct technique to throw, roll and catch a ball. They will explore elements of movement through a range of throwing and catching tasks both individually and collaboratively.
Year 1 & 2
LI: - To develop a sound understanding of various basic movement sequences (run, hop. skip, jump), whilst improving spatial awareness skills by exploring how their body moves in space and its effect on those around them.
Students will combine basic movement skills to explore the effect they have on others through a variety of tagging/evading games. Spatial awareness will be further developed as students are placed into situations which require quick thinking and decision making in response to external stimuli.
LI – To develop hand-eye coordination through practicing the fundamental motor skills of catching and throwing (rolling and stopping)
Students will be developing the fundamental motor skills of catching and throwing (rolling and stopping) through a range of hand-eye coordination based learning tasks. We will then work towards transferring these learnt skills into various contexts.
Year 3 and 4
Athletics Learning Intention: To work toward success at the upcoming school athletics carnival by displaying confident execution required for the running, jumping and throwing events.
During this unit, students will be introduced to the basic techniques required to perform shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. We will discuss the rules for each event and learn to identify the key components of successfully performing each skill.
Hand Eye Coordination Learning Intention: To show correct technique when performing over and under arm throws and catches both at a target and during small group learning tasks.
Students will focus on the Fundamental Motor Skills of throwing and catching, applying them in a variety game situations. They will also spend time exploring their decision making skills by testing alternative outcomes through the use of force, space and different techniques to suit the learning task.
Year 5 and 6
Athletics Learning Intention: To work toward success at the upcoming school athletics carnival by being able to confidently and competently execute required skills in running, jumping and throwing.
Students will be spending the first half of this term developing their skills in preparation for the upcoming Athletics Carnivals. As part of the unit on Athletics, students will be working on applying previously learnt skills to their practise and refining their movement sequences.
Hand Eye Coordination Learning Intention: To show increasing levels of accuracy when performing over and under arm throws both at a target and during movement games.
The second unit of work for students this term will be to develop their throwing and catching abilities. This will be done through the use of increasingly complex learning tasks where strategic thinking and decision making skills will be a focus.
Syndal District Swimming Carnival
Glen Waverley Primary School had 13 students competing at the Syndal District Swimming Carnival on Wednesday, 10th February. All students swam extremely well and represented our school in a very positive manner with many of them achieving personal best efforts.
