LOTE - Term 1
Hello and welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a great holiday and are ready for another fantastic year of learning. This term, students will begin or further develop their language skills and cultural understanding through their inquiry units and the Lunar New Year Festival.
PREP
Learning Intention: To understand the language of numbers in Mandarin.
Students will be introduced to the basics of Chinese language such as greetings and self-introduction. They will engage with the language and culture through songs, stories and the Lunar New Year Celebration. Students will also learn how to count and read numbers 1-10 in Mandarin.
Year 1
Learning Intention: To understand the language of colours in Mandarin.
Students will begin to explore vocabulary about colours. They will learn how to name their favourite colour and explore the colours of the rainbow in Mandarin. Students will also engage in Chinese cultural experience through the celebration of Lunar New Year.
YEAR 2
Learning Intention: To understand the language of food in Mandarin.
Students will be introduced to words and sentences in relation to food. They will learn about foods associated with the Lunar New Year. Students will also further develop an understanding of how Chinese people celebrate their new year.
YEAR 3
Learning Intention: To understand different types of stationery and furniture in Mandarin.
Students will learn about words and sentences related to stationery and furniture used in everyday life and study basic sentence structures in Mandarin. Traditional Chinese furniture and symbols will also be introduced to students. The study of Pinyin and Chinese everyday language will be ongoing.
Year 4
Learning Intention: To understand the language of seasons and time in Mandarin.
Students will explore vocabulary and sentences related to seasons and time at an advanced level. They will participate in the celebration of Lunar New Year. Students will also explore the different seasons and time differences between Australia, China, and other countries.
Year 5
Learning Intention: To understand the language of clothes and footwear in Mandarin.
Students will learn about words and sentences related to clothing and footwear. Traditional Chinese costume, ‘Hanfu’, will be introduced to students as an inquiry study. Students will also reinforce their knowledge of stroke order and improve their Chinese handwriting.
Year 6
Learning Intention: To understand various foods at an advanced level.
This study will cover the vocabulary and sentences for students to describe and give information about Chinese food, Western-style food and popular food in the cultures that they are interested in. Students will explore the eight major cuisines in China and investigate which cuisines are popular in Australia and other countries and why.
