Arts Week 2020

Reflection

Arts Week looked a little different this year. With half of the school on site, and half still learning remotely it unfortunately meant that we couldn’t provide the usual range of fun activities we normally would. However, we didn’t let that stop the fun.

Monday: Media Studies

Monday was a celebration of Media Studies. Some of our friends in the Media Industry discussed their careers specifically for our students. The talks were engaging and insightful and were designed to provide information about the diverse jobs a career in the Media Industry could provide.

It was also the first day of our week-long ‘Photography’ and ‘Facemask Design’ competitions. Today’s Photo theme was: LIGHT

Tuesday: Visual Arts

Tuesday was all about Visual Art. Ms Johnstone did her best ‘Bob Ross’ and taught a lesson on painting a seascape using water colours. Check it out below. (If you don't know who Bob Ross is, check him out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrAMRxBB5KI

We also had artist Ben Taranto hold a live Q&A session over Google Meets, where students were able to ask him questions about a life as a professional artist. Ben has worked at Staughton before as part of the Artist in Residence program.

TEXTURE was the photo theme for Tuesday

Wednesday: Music

Wednesday was Music Day! Students and staff were encouraged to share their favourite albums and songs with the community via a Padlet. A really interesting mix of music and tastes throughout the school, and couple of surprise choices.

Some of our music staff also released a little lockdown project they had been working on. Recorded separately during isolation, the group recorded the 80s classic ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by Journey. Take a look below.

The Photography theme for Wednesday was: CONTRAST.

THURSDAY: DRAMA

Thursday was the final day of Arts Week due to the public holiday on Friday, and it was all about Drama. We obviously couldn’t put on a proper production this year, so instead, some of our Production leaders created a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, set in the world of quarantine. Check it out below.

The final theme for the photography competition was: PORTRAIT.

And Arts Week officially came to a close with our Senior Arts Showcase live on Facebook on Thursday night.

Hosted by Ms Grace and Ms Watters, students discussed their final works and some of our music students performed. Thanks to everyone that tuned in live to watch.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the Arts Weeks events this year. We are looking forward to coming back even bigger and better next year.
