From the Director of Sport

2019 has been another busy and successful year in sport at The College. Beginning the year with a successful performance at the Glenelg Division Cross Country and Athletics Sports, we also performed extremely well at the GD Swimming coming a close 2nd overall. At ICCES level, we had our best performance at the Swimming for many years and our most talented swimmers were able at compete at the inaugural VSAC level competition against the best in the state. In Athletics and Cross Country competitions we maintained our positions and had many individual gain PB’s. We continue to dominate these events in regards to points gained on the day in relation to our school population and this speaks volumes of the sporting talent we have at our small school. At the ICCES Winter Tour, our senior hockey team won an incredible 5th premiership in a row!

In local sport, we managed premierships in the Under 14 and 16 HDJCA boys’ cricket competition, A grade HDCA women’s cricket, 1st XI boys’ cricket, senior men’s and women’s A Grade hockey, under 16 hockey, junior and senior basketball, Wednesday night soccer, Saturday morning netball, as well as the Under 16 College Magpies team winning their fourth HKJFL grand final in a row! Our rowing program and the various crews had great success at many regattas, abd there have been impressive individual clay target shooting, racquet sports and equestrian results. We have had many students doing so well individually in their chosen sports and making regional, state and even national teams which is a credit to their dedication to the sport.

We have also continued to embed our new sporting culture framework and the 5 positive sporting core values/character traits we want to promote to everyone involved in the sporting program and see the students thrive in these key areas:

  • Commitment – service, communication, teamwork
  • Passion – pride, enjoyment, determination
  • Character – mindset, resilience, initiative
  • Mastery – challenge, achievement, growth
  • Legacy – sportsmanship, role modelling, memories

2020 will bring some more exciting opportunities and initiatives at both GD and ICCES level in the sporting program so please stay tuned for more information on this in the new year. Dates for major sporting events can be found on the school calendar. I have attached the swimming training timetable for Term One with this newsletter for your planning as it starts on the first day back at school!

The “2020 Codes of Behaviour” document will be sent out to all families at the end of this year and I ask that you and your child/children please read and sign this important document where necessary and return the last page at the beginning of the school year before being involved in any sport.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in the sporting program at the school. It covers a wide range of sports and relies on the help of many staff members, parents, old collegians, community members and of course our enthusiastic students to give the opportunities presented and achieve the success we do. I wish everyone a relaxing and safe holiday period.

NETBALL REPORT

After a thrilling Grand Final win, congratulations are in order to the Under 13 College Magpies who defeated Macarthur 19 to 18. The game was close and competitive from the start to the very end, and it was obvious that the first team to settle and convert on the scoreboard would manage to get the win.

The team was co-coached by Year 10 student Millie Dopheide and Year 11 student Georgia Lehmann. Throughout the season, the team of nine had some amazing wins and has shown consistent improvement each week.

Accurate shooting and strong offensive rebounds by shooters, Meg Ogle and Sarah Richardson, made the team get off to a strong start and applied early pressure on the opposition’s defenders. In the midcourt, steady transitioning from defence, topped off by great feeding into the goal circle by Milly Clark, Elsie Adams and Bella Chow, ensured that the hard work of the defenders was being rewarded whilst also giving their shooters endless amounts of encouragement which boosted their confidence in the nerve wracking final. Important intercepts and strong rebounds were taken in crucial moments by defenders Sienna Lewis, Libby Diprose and India Ross. The whole team’s ability to stay calm and make careful yet quick decisions with ball in hand is a credit to coaches Millie and Georgia. Once again, congratulations to the Under 13s College Magpie premiers on such a fantastic season. I look forward to see many more incredible performances from our junior players next year.
