Maths Matters

Year 8 games

The Year 8 Mathematics class has been having fun lately with maths games. First they got the opportunity to get creative in making a game using fractions, decimals and percentages to show their communication skills in Mathematics, then they got to play the games over several lessons.

Some students chose to base their game on Monopoly  or Snap, while others used their artistic skills to come up with amazingly colourful and totally new games.

One of these involved making a ‘maths meal’ of three courses by answering questions on fractions, decimals and percentages correctly; another was a fantasy battle scenario with mythical creatures protecting their castles using maths questions to fight for supremacy.

Another student used his knowledge of computer language to create a computer program to challenge the students’ maths skills in fractions, decimals and percentages. Quite a few made their own sets of beautifully fashioned cards with cute drawings and quirky concepts – absolutely incredible ideas to motivate and engage with an otherwise (possibly) dry topic.

Playing the games, of course, was the best fun and we had many students lining up to play the different games. A good time was had by all!
