Music Notes

Spotlight on jazz

Set in the beautiful surrounds of Emulation Hall, a magnificent late 1920s Masonic building, our jazz and contemporary music night on 1 June had the audience sitting back in their chairs relaxing and listening to some incredible performances.

The crowd cheered and roared as each performer braved the stage and delivered their heartfelt performance. Musicians were supported by an ever-encouraging and judgement free audience, which allowed those making their debut performance to express themselves freely and openly. Students have been working towards this goal for many months and the high standard of musicianship and skill was very obvious to all.

Composition is a very important element of the Music curriculum at Preshil and this was evident on the night. Several student compositions were performed throughout the evening, including works by Zoe Wickham, Mat O’Connor, Eleanor Theeboom and Hayden Powell. Our Year 12 students - Winnie McQuinn, Ted Griffith, Will Holmes a Court, Hayden Powell and Josh Moulieris - featured throughout the night, performing works from their Music Investigation programs.

Several ensembles, including Arlington Strings & Friends, Flying for a Prize Choir, Adrian’s Band, The Year 9 Band, The Stellas, The Cello Ensemble, The All-In-Group and Pavement Choir, gathered on stage to dazzle the audience and even get them singing!

The night was brought together by the wonderful MCs - Winnie McQuinn and Ted Griffith - and Stage Manager, Georgia Goodall. A very big thank you to them for a smooth running evening filled with glamorous introductions and crazy jokes! It was a privilege to experience and witness the wonderful music-making that occurred and I encourage everyone to attend next year!
