Why a market?

Alison Sanza

Student Leadership

Brunswick Secondary College’s annual Twilight Market offers a wonderful opportunity for innumerable sections of the school community to work collaboratively, providing students with the opportunity to gain valuable skills in critical and creative thinking, collaboration, teamwork, communication and problem solving. It also allows us to draw on the resources and goodwill of our parent community and the local Brunswick/Coburg community.

The preparation begins early in the school year and  some of the tasks included are preparing artwork for advertising flyers/ posters/ billboards, liaising with  local businesses to host stalls, visiting local businesses for donations, preparing a site map, planning the entertainment, putting up posters in the community and creating a Facebook page. Set up and pack down on the day require a whole host of volunteers and, besides systematic organisation, there is much muscle power required to pack up marquees and move furniture back to its original location!

The result on the day is well worth the effort. The car park is transformed into a vibrant space filed with colour, crowds, music, chatter and an atmosphere of revelry. It is a true reflection of the wonderful community we have at the school and our links with the local community.

The money raised (around $5,500 this year) will be put towards improving outdoor recreational spaces for students especially with additional outdoor seating.

Sincere thanks to the multitude of people involved in contributing to, planning, setting up, running and packing up the 2018 Twilight Market.

As part of the SRC, I was involved in creating posters to advertise the goods which were on sale at the Twilight Market. The event was such a success and it is great to know that the proceeds are going towards improving recreational areas around the school. I can’t wait for next year!

I was involved in the preparation and execution of the Twilight Market. I commend the cooperation and teamwork that extended between students of all years, teachers of all academic backgrounds and members from the wider community who were involved in creating the splendid annual event that is the Twilight Market.

The Twilight Market was an incredible effort from a huge number of students and community members. Numerous businesses donated products to sell which was much appreciated. This strengthens students’ bonds with the community and vice versa. The friendly atmosphere allowed for easy socialising and the learning of business skills in a gentle environment. We thank all participants for contributing to the success of an event which develops, broadens and strengthens the skills of BSC students and builds valuable community bonds.

The best thing about the Twilight Market was the amazing contribution that everyone made in some way or another towards it. The stalls that everyone put up were amazing. The food stalls and the music contributed to the vibrant atmosphere and sense of community. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for next year!

As a member of the SRC, I assisted in organising the Twilight Market by handing out letters to possible donors in shops along Sydney Road. On the day, I helped set up the stage and move the items being sold to the stalls. It was so much fun to see the brilliant turnout on the night.

Parents’ Association

The Twilight Market was a great way to start the weekend with music, a food truck dinner and getting to know other BSC families. It was well run by the SRC and the relatively balmy Melbourne evening helped make it an easygoing night. There was a little suspense at the Silent Auction - with several bidding wars over the great items on offer! The Parents' Association had three fundraising activities on the go - second hand uniforms, cakes and a drinks bar.

As I heard someone say on the night, I'm already looking forward to the next Twilight Market!
