What makes Visual Communication and Design creative and clever yet systematic?

Shannon Widdeson

Head of Learning for Art

Visual language is integral to the design process and refers to the communication of ideas through experiences, images and objects.

Students use visual language to communicate their ideas at all stages of the process including research, generation of ideas and development of concepts, refinement and resolution.

Studying Visual Communication and Design (VCD) at school can lead to many exciting career paths such as an industrial design or engineering, jewellery design, set design, graphic design, architecture, web design or development, urban planning, multimedia development, interior design, or advertising management. The list goes on!

At BSC, students are enthused by VCD in both junior and senior courses - and some of their work will be on display at the upcoming BSC Art & Design exhibition on November 23 2018.

If you are considering the Art & Design learning pathway,  visiting the  BSC Art & Design Exhibition

is a must!

A diverse and exciting range of artistic projects will be on display, representing student work from across all areas of Art & Design - from Studio Art to VCD to Textiles and much, much more!  The exhibition will be held in G Block Flexispace (upstairs) starting November 22 2018 - don't miss it!

I like how VCD teaches you how to draw an object from a certain perspective or viewpoint. The drawing will then become a three-dimensional image that shows height, width and depth for a realistic representation of an object. When I was drawing my one-point-perspective task for VCD, the first thing I needed to think about is that everything in the drawing is starting at the same perspective point. This is so the drawing will look more natural and it will look like what we see in real life. Shading is an important technique in VCD as well, because it will make an object in a drawing look more realistic. Students should choose to study VCD because they will learn a lot of new techniques.

In VCD, everything you do is your own original idea. Also it’s a very relaxing subject where you can take your time and do a good job whilst enjoying yourself. When you are given a task there is a design process involved which takes trial and error. The best way to approach this is with an open mind knowing that your first design no matter how much you like it may not be your final. People should choose VCD for the reasons that makes it different to the other subjects. I personally choose it because it allows me to design whatever comes to my head and I am a very creative person who really enjoys design. It also is a subject that gets everyone interested in what they are doing by sparking their creative side.

Year 10

VCD is more creative and lets the students pick their own approach to designing to fit their needs. In VCD you have to think about meeting a design brief for whatever particular audience you are designing for. As long as you meet the needs of your audience your ideas will always work. If you have any interest at all in drawing or designing you should study VCD, it is the perfect class as you will learn many techniques and ways to improve and develop your skills.

Year 11

VCD is different to other subjects because it allows me to open up to creative thinking and explore different types of design, from doing tasks such as designing houses and buildings to focusing on typography and imagery creating logos for a wide range of brands. There are many stages to approaching a task in VCD! Firstly research and brainstorms are crucial to kick starting your ideas and getting the ball rolling, then plenty of sketching and trailing with different types of media and materials also helps you find the perfect style for your task. Finally producing your final copy needs to be neat and precise. Students should choose to do VCD if they are interested in learning how to design and communicate in a visual way. The amount of time and effort you put into VCD you will get out in a rewarding way.
