Head of Learning  - Art & Design

This year, all Year 8 students have completed three new core creative subjects allowing opportunities to explore a variety of mediums and techniques in the Arts.

All students have completed a semester of Art where the learning focus was on traditional print-making and ceramic skills. Product Design introduces students to the design process through which they learn about the process that a professional designer uses in the industrial design field. Digital Design develops students’ skills in designing digital artworks such as magazine covers and animated GIFs. Through this, students learn about how media communicates meaning to the audience.

As a result, students will leave Year 8 with a foundation in theory and practice across a variety of creative disciplines to refine their interests in the Arts as they progress into Year 9 elective subjects. The student feedback reflects their discoveries, enjoyment and perspective of the importance of the new skills and techniques they have acquired. The results are truly lovely.

The print that I have made is a rhino beetle with a checker pattern on its lower back and a thick mirrored semicircle on its head. There are two smaller beetles with antenna in the upper left and right corners of the page; they were made with a very simple design. Beneath the rhino beetle is a bee with a lush mane and completely black eyes, and a striped abdomen. I drew some designs of bugs off the top of my head then found some photographs of rhino beetles on the internet. Once I finished my etching, I soaked some paper in water, I covered the acetate sheet in ink and got it into all of the cracks. I then removed all the excess ink. I really enjoyed removing the ink, even though it was difficult it was still satisfying to see the ink begin to disappear and reveal my design.

In Art, what is exciting is that we get to draw designs and have more choice in what you want to do. In ceramics when we were making a Toby jug and we got to choose what we wanted to design, it was fun and exciting. I’ve been challenged by some of the concepts of Art, such as trying to use Art Elements like line/shape/texture in every project. I’ve learned how to draw more realistic drawings and how to design so it looks like the real thing. In real life I could use it in architecture design.

I enjoyed doing printmaking. I liked adding details into my design for an acetate print and carving the plastic to get a good print. Despite my ceramic toby jug not going the way I planned, I still enjoyed the process and keep my finished jug in my locker!

Year 8

I learned different techniques for printmaking that I hadn’t done before – you etch the plate and then put the ink on and then, boom! You’ve got an image! It was fun.

Art was a great subject. I liked clay, particularly the coiling - it inspired me to make a snake as my toby jug. I was really happy with how it came out of the kiln!

Year 8

I learned more art in Semester 1 than I have in my whole school life! I loved doing the clay and designing a picture for printmaking.

In Digital Design, we have been using new programs and doing things that we’ve never done before like using Photoshop to make animations.

For our magazine task we had the expectation for it to be authentic, which was challenging. I have learedt how to use Photoshop to make things other than photographs. If you were looking for a job in graphic design this would be useful.

Year 8

In Digital Design, I found that using Photoshop and changing the pictures was new. I found it challenging to remember where all the buttons or tools are in Photoshop. If I had to make a poster for something I could use my Photoshop skills to make it.

It’s fun to design something that you can take home and use which is why I like Product Design. In the mirror frame project it was hard to carve the design the way I wanted to because I had a complicated design, so I had to use my time wisely and use different sized tools to carve out more detailed areas. A new skill I’ve learnt is making a box, so in the future I could use what I’ve learnt at school to make a jewellery box.

In Product Design, it’s been good to use the tools so we can use them later in VCE Art. For example, the embossing tools for the mirror project. Doing stitching was new and challenging, because I hadn’t made a pillow before. I learnt how to sew stuff, so I can sew in the future, like if I need to fix my clothes.

Where to from here?
