Accounting Students

do BSC proud at

Monash Competition

AGAIN!

Matthew Lynch

VCE Accounting teacher

Student learning is not ever limited to just the classroom. Participating in in the  Monash University Accounting Week Case Study Competition has again proved to be a wonderfully educational, social and personal experience for our talented Accounting studies students this year.  Translating their classroom learning into this competition environment has shown them how thier studies will play out in the 'real world' environment, re-affirmening  their confidence to pursue tertiary studies and a career pathwas for which they have a real talent and passion.

The college fielded two teams in the competition this year: Team One, consisting of Rafiul Akan, Joyee Goh and Elaine Luo, and Team Two made up of Reece Doyle, Daniel Porter and Ann Thong.

Significanty, our teams can be congratulated on their exceptional commitment and achievement as they have been rated among the top six teams in the state.

The competition first  involved analysing and interpreting financial data for a fictional company named Fitness Power Metrics. Both teams successfully wrote a report advising management on decisions that impressed judges. The second phase of the competition was to prepare an oral presentation at Monash University to Professors and a Doctor in Accounting. BSC's Team Two  demonstrated an in-depth analysis of the business and came up with some unique arguments but needed to improve their time management during their presentation.

After the winners of the presentations were announced, the judges did communicate that BSC's Team One -  Rafiul Akan, Joyee Goh andElaine Luo-  came very close to winning the competition with their professional and well-rehearsed presentation.

Although, neither team won the competition the students were adamant that the day at Monash was a great experience and opportunity. I congratulate them all on their exemplary teamwork and commiment to achieving their best at this competition.

When asked about the experience the students offered to following comments:

It was an unforgettable experience and an opportunity to learn from other leading Accounting students in the state. The professors and Doctor of Accounting were welcoming and supportive. The food was tasty too.

At first, I found the presentation a daunting prospect and once it was done I was relieved. This experience will help if I have an oral presentation in the future.

The competition helped develop my public speaking skills and it boosted my confidence. I liked the free food!

We put a lot of time and effort into this competition. It was a worthwhile opportunity to participate - even though we didn’t win it allowed us to be exposed to a different university experience. I liked exploring the Monash campus and we found out a lot about Monash from talking to the lecturers.

The competition was a good insight into the professional decision-making service that Accountants can provide. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win - but nonetheless the event was a rewarding and fun experience.
