You me and Empathy: Jayneen Sanders

One of the most important social skills a child can learn is empathy. Being able to understand how another person is feeling and recognising their needs helps people to connect to one another across race, culture and the diversity that is ever-present and so important to our world. This charming story uses verse, beautiful illustrations and a little person called Quinn to model the meaning of empathy. Throughout the story, Quinn shows an abundance of understanding, compassion and kindness towards others. Showing empathy towards others is a learnt trait, and one to nurture and cherish with the children in our care.

Author Jayneen Sanders has written the following discussion questions and activities to promote empathy, kindness and compassion. Some of my favourite are as follows:

  • When do you feel happy? Sad? Worried? Mad? Do you think other people have these kinds of feelings too? Why do you say that?
  • Do you think our world is special? Why do you say that? Who are the people in your life that show you empathy and kindness? What ways do they show you empathy and kindness? How do you show empathy and kindness to others?
  • Kind deeds: brainstorm and then list ‘10 kind deed’ your family/class could accomplish ocer the next 12 months. Tick them off as they occur.
  • Write a letter: encourage your child to write a letter or an email to say thank you to someone who has shown them kindness or who they admire, stating the reasons.
