#HARMONYDAY!!

Following on from the End Racism Project begun in 2021, the Senior SRC students and in particular, the Year 11 SRC students, planned and organised Kildare Harmony Week 2022 celebrations.

This week each Homegroup received a different flag representing the varied cultures reflected in our school. Students coloured the flags, then researched the following facts and added them to the flag.

Interesting Facts:

  • Capital City
  • Population
  • National Food
  • National Sport
  • National Animal
  • How do you say ‘Hello’ in the language of the country
  • Country Motto (if applicable)
  • Other facts you find interesting

On Friday 25 March, our Harmony Day celebrations took place and we displayed all the flags in the Resource Centre.

During Harmony Week, Year 11 SRC members - Tyrone Vatulbuli, Seb McCorry and Eze Emebiri visited all Year 8 PDHPE classes to discuss racism here at Kildare. Year 8 is currently covering the unit of work titled RESPECT.

The Year 11 SRC discussed the causes and impacts of racism, along with the history of racial slurs and examples of casual racism.

Classes heard very powerful personal accounts and together identified practical strategies the Year 8 students could do and say to end racism at our College. The key to leading change at KIldare being a more inclusive and welcoming community, where everyone feels as though they belong, is through education.

The three key messages were:

  • Be brave and courageous
  • Speak out - Be an upstander
  • Think before you speak
