DUX 2021

Congratulations to Vy Vu – College Dux 2021

Anne Siciliano

Teacher - EAL

Vy has been an inspiration to many, not just because of her academic skills, but her outstanding ability to see the positive in all situations.

Whilst her last two years of schooling were punctuated by lockdowns and the challenges of remote learning, Vy found new ways to continue to learn, practise her skills and refine her knowledge to the utmost level. She learned how to use and make the most of collaboration spaces, meetings with her teachers and watching various video resources made available to her - as a way to ensure that she would continue to improve and enrich her learning. If Vy was uncertain about any part of her lessons,  she would confer with her teachers again and again to discuss the concept until she felt secure in her knowledge. Vy developed strong relationships with her teachers, and these partnerships supported her desire to achieve her best possible results in her VCE studies.

Although some may think of Vy as the “quiet achiever”, her work in class was not as quiet as you may think! She commanded the attention of her classmates with her clever contributions and compassionate tone, as well as her capacity for improvement with every offering. When Vy shared her work in class it was often greeted with applause and wide smiles from her peers who were brimming with pride in her – always happy to hear her ideas come their way.

Vy arrived from Vietnam in her Year 7, studying at the Brunswick English Language Centre for a short time. She joined the mainstream school in the second semester of that year, and completed her secondary schooling in English (her second language). Vy was an active participant of the school community. She involved herself with co-curricular programs including the Student Leadership Program, holding various Student Representative Council positions during her school career.

We admire Vy for her dedication, diligence, positivity and commitment to excellence; achieving 2021 Dux of Year 12 will, no doubt, be just one of her many achievements in life.

We thank her for the valuable contribution she has made to our school community and wish her every success as she moves into a world beyond Brunswick.

Dux 2021

2021 was certainly a memorable year. The many lockdowns were challenging for the Year 12 students, particularly as we approached our exams, but I think the difficulties helped us realise how hard the teachers worked for us and how much they cared about our learning.

Remote learning also taught me to appreciate the little things, like a joke from a friend, a kind encouragement from a teacher, and the opportunity to do group work with my classmates. In the end, my best Year 12 memories are not of an amazing formal or a dress-up day parade; I remember the smaller things - the hours spent on impossible exam questions with my Maths teachers, the free lunch that the Food Studies staff cooked for us, and the chance to hang out with my friends again after lockdown ended.

I will be doing the Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University starting this year, and the next few years will be a great adventure as I continue to explore myself and my interests. I look forward to university, though I know that I will miss high school a lot.
