WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

The Addams Family

FLOURISH: Last week we hosted our production of The Addams Family over three amazing nights.  It was a sensational show and we are thrilled that we persisted and could run this amazing event and support our young people involved to showcase their hard work and in musical theatre.

2021 graduates Maya S and Charlotte P took the lead and together with an outstanding cast put on a magical display that showcased so much talent. We are so proud of everyone's hard work and dedication behind the scenes. It was also the debut of our refurbished Food Van, where guests got to enjoy snacks and drinks (keep an eye out further down the page for a video from our VCAL Team).

As you can see, it was all hands on with some of our wonderful students helping out with designing props for our set.

What's been happening in the Art space?

UNITE: A new year is always exciting, time for new projects and a chance to meet new students joining us in the art department. We welcome teachers Sarah Perry to years 7-10 Art and Broderick Ashmole years 7-10 Media, Music, Vis Com and Art and look forward to sharing many of our exciting projects in the newsletter across the year.

Currently we celebrate Georgia C and Francesca C's impressive work on the murals for the year 7 literacy room commenced in the final weeks of 2021. Both Georgia and Francesca demonstrated great initiative and great skill as they worked on this ambitious project.

Year 11 Environmental Science

RESPECT: Students in Year 11 Environmental Science created a visual representation of the water earth as part of studies into the hydrosphere. Leah and Elyse can be seen here with their work.

Year 12 Visual Communication

FLOURISH: Here is a selection of some promotional posters that the Year 12 Visual Communication students have completed.

They are currently working on a practical SAC where they design a poster, chair and pavilion for the 2022 Japanese Film Festival.  Aren't they brilliant?!

FLOURISH: The VCAL students and Hands on Learning Team are proud to present to the community our very own Surf Coast Secondary College Food Van.  We began this project in 2020 and over the last two years have faced many challenges.  We want to thank our students from both our 2020 and 2021 VCAL and HOL cohorts who continued to work with the project and did not give up. Without your resilience and dedication, we would not have our incredible food van!  This project has taught us all that often at those key moments that we want to give up, that is the best time to keep going.

Thank you doesn’t seem enough to sum up our appreciation for Adam Micallef, James Ashley and Greg Holahan. Without the three of you this project would never have been possible.

We want to thank and give a massive shout out to the following businesses that have either donated materials or provided us with high quality products at a very reduced price. We could not have done this without your support:

  • Bunnings Torquay North
  • Arist PTY.LTD- Kristy Pike
  • BlendCo Southern- (Formerly Espresso & Coffee Solutions) - Hamish, Kurt and Mitch
  • MCG Signs - Lynne Pitcher
  • Tyrepower Torquay
  • The Sustainable Sparky - Joel Fitzpatrick and Cooper Heard
  • Men’s Shed Torquay - Gus (The legend)

The van was suitably utilised for some prepacked food and drinks during our school production of The Addams Family last week!  At the show, there was a suggestion box because our van is missing one thing… a NAME!  Details on the final decision of our caravan name coming soon.

Kokoda

STRIVE: Congratulations to Cooper B (Year 11) who has been selected to go to Kokoda with the Geelong Youth Engagement Group later this year.  He will begin training shortly.

Also congratulations to Ane G who will take part in an alternative program - Strive, which is modelled along similar lines but doesn’t involve going on the Kokoda trip.

Both students were outstanding in their interview.  Their first question is always:

"Tell us some good things about SC?"  Usually students will answer "Friends", "teachers" "subjects" etc.  Both of these students categorically answered firstly - "Teachers" which is a great testimony to our wonderful teaching staff here at SCSC.

Both students are a great reflection of our values and we wish them well.
