Netball

The 2022 Saturday Morning Junior Netball Competition has been successful for The Hamilton and Alexandra College, with all teams playing great netball. The College Magpies have had a victorious season so far, winning two out of the three games and coming a draw in the other. The girls have gelled extremely well together as a team and are playing great netball. Isabella and Lily are working extremely well together in the goals, shooting well in addition to getting some great offensive rebounds. Sophie Spence and Matilda Whitehead have been crucial in bringing the ball down from the centre pass. With the help of Isabella, the girls are working well together to feed the circle. Sophie Whitehead and Ava Murrihy are playing great defensive roles and are picking off great intercepts and with Claudia Cochran helping them in the backline, they have formed a solid defensive unit. Pepper Bowes was playing WA in the first game and was able to help move the ball from the centre into the goal third but is now unfortunately out due to injury.

Vixens and Swifts are also having a successful season. Having versed each other last week the rivalry was at a peak! It was a great game with strong passages of play from both teams, however Vixens came out on top. A big thank you to the number of fill-ins needed in order to fill the Swifts team on the day. Your support meant that the game was able to go ahead. The Swifts have won two out of their four games. Chloe Frost has been strong in goals, as well as Sarah Richardson who has been crucial down the defence end. Sophie Spence who comes up most weeks to fill in has been strong in the midcourt with Grace Macpherson.

Vixens have had a steady improvement as they got back into the swing of playing again. They are playing some great netball and showing improvements in their team play each week. Round 3 was the first week the Vixens had no fill-ins, meaning players were able to move around and develop flow from one end of the court to the other. The defence players were fantastic in taking intercepts and the Vixens made the most of the scoring opportunities presented. In the second last week, Vixens were very short of players and we were very thankful to the girls who filled in from both the Magpies and the Swifts to enable the games to go ahead.  After three games straight on a hot day we were very pleased to come out the other end with wins all round!

A big thank you to all the coaches, team managers and umpires, as well as the parents and family members for getting the girls to the games. Good luck to all netballers in the final game of the season. Try outs will be held in early Term 2 for the representative netball teams.

Please note the draw for this week. All our teams play at the COLLEGE SPORTS CENTRE.  Please be aware that parking MUST be in the carpark at the back of the sports centre, entered from Horner St.  It is the last week of the season. I would like to thank the parents who have gone out of their way to help in so many ways.  Also, thanks to the students who have been willing to play more than one game some weeks to help out the other teams.  I look forward to seeing you all again for netball in Term 4 (maybe on the new courts at Pedrina Park).

Rowing Report 2022

The Victorian Rowing State Championships were contested in early on Lake Wendouree, Ballarat. Our Senior Girls’ crew of Lucy Roberts, Macey Cameron, Finlay Cameron and Ava Mould coxed by Milly Howells and coached by Simon Ross placed third in their heat of the U/19 coxed quad scull. The girl’s found further success later in the day winning a Bronze Medal in the Division 2 Open School Coxed Quad Scull with the inclusion of Su-Riann Kim.   To begin their final regatta, the Male U/19 Coxed Quad Scull of Ned Walker, Will Merrin, Oliver Ferguson and Angus Stewart, coxed by Minnie Walker and coached by Josh Frichot narrowly missed third place by 0.18 seconds. With the addition of Harry Mould, the same crew finished fourth in the Division 1 Open School Coxed Quad Scull. A special conclusion to Ned, Harry and Oliver’s careers in 2-kilometre racing and College rowing. The next day, our junior crews experienced plenty of success with Jemima Ross, Suri Ann Kim, Sophie Merrin and Ava Mould coached by Paul Mould with Minnie Walker as the cox winning Bronze in the Female U/17 Coxed Quad Scull. Meanwhile, the impressive junior boy’s coxed quad scull challenged the senior boys all the way narrowly finishing 3 seconds behind their elders in the Male B Grade Coxed Quad Scull. Jemima Ross also won Bronze in the Female U/15 single scull. Thank you to all the coaches, staff and parents involved in the organisation of the event.  The College spirit is unmatched and all the support was most welcomed and appreciated.  Ned Walker

The 2022 Head of the Schoolgirls’ Regatta was overall a great success. With roughly 10,000 spectators there was an atmosphere like no other, creating a great sense of pressure for all. The junior girls’ crews showed enormous improvement, which was highlighted in their times and their technique. The 3rd Girls’ Quad Scull stroked by Xar Christie-Hill finished fourth in their E final in Division 4, this is an incredible achievement as there were 9 divisions in their age group. The 2nd Girls’ Quad Scull, stroked by Ava Mould showed that they are fiercely competitive and rowed immaculately; finishing second in their Division 2 B final. Molly Mecham showed that determination and courage can make all the difference, as she bravely completed her HOSG experience in a single skull, finishing her final race in stellar style and with a large smile on her face. Both of our double sculls showed immense improvement especially as they were in the highest division, competing against the best schoolgirl double rowers in the state. Finally, the Senior Girl’s Coxed Quad Scull consisting of Finlay Cameron, Sylvia Page, Lucy Roberts, Macy Cameron and coxed by Milly Howells completed their last regatta in exceptional style. The Senior Girls’ won their B final of Open Division 2 by several boat lengths, finishing six years of rowing in fairy tale style. The regatta couldn’t have run as smoothly as it did without our expert coaches Simon Ross and Beanie Mould who have dedicated enormous proportions of their time to the rowers and the club, we are all so grateful and cannot express enough of our appreciation for your wisdom, time and knowledge. We thank Mrs Williams for her support over the four days.  Lastly, an enormous thank you to Sarah Roberts, Alex Page, Rosie Merrin, Jack Nichols, Megan Mould, Kerri Ross for their lovely catering and entertainment, as well as all the other parents who came and supported us throughout the course of the weekend. Thank you Lucy Roberts
