Junior School News

Religious Education in the Junior School

Welcome back to another term of faith and learning. I hope you continue to have a blessed Easter season with your families.

Online Learning

The students at St Gregory’s Junior School have been working incredibly hard with their online learning.

The teachers have seen some wonderful work completed by the students and we praise their efforts, especially with adapting so quickly to the change in learning.

Kindergarten is learning that Jesus is the light of the world. They have learnt that after Jesus died on the cross He rose again, just like a sunrise.

Year 1 have been learning about Mary during the month of May and celebrating her life and all of the wonderful things that she did. The students have also been creating wonderful Easter prayer spaces at home.

Year 2 have been very creative in finding ways to represent parts of the Easter story through art and by using LEGO.

Year 3 were asked to order and label images of Christ during the events of Holy Week.

Year 4 students have illustrated Good Friday through using natural materials and have created Easter prayer spaces using different symbols.

Year 5 were asked to think about a time when they have sensed a feeling of ‘spirit’ in a place, event or person and were required to write about what ‘spirit’ means to them.

Year 6 have been learning about Mary, the faithful disciple. They were asked to identify women who are models of faith and courage and describe how they lived their faith in God. Charbel recognised Mother Teresa as someone who he sees as a role model.

During the month of May, we are encouraged to pray the Rosary, as a way of celebrating Mary. This is a wonderful opportunity to gather as a family in prayer. For families with younger children, this is an opportunity for your children to learn the Catholic tradition by saying a decade of the Rosary each night.

Let us keep praying for each other through this challenging time as we look forward to seeing all of our students back at school.

God bless,

COVID- 19 A Prayer of Solidarity

For all who have contracted coronavirus, We pray for care and healing.

For those who are particularly vulnerable, We pray for safety and protection.

For all who experience fear or anxiety, We pray for peace of mind and spirit.

For affected families who are facing difficult decisions between food on the table or public safety, We pray for policies that recognize their plight.

For those who do not have adequate health insurance, We pray that no family will face financial burdens alone.

For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status, We pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all.

For our brothers and sisters around the world, We pray for shared solidarity.

For public officials and decision makers, We pray for wisdom and guidance.

Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all.

Grant peace, Grant comfort, Grant healing, Be with us Lord.

Amen.

Rules Updated for Premier's Reading challenge 2020

Like everything, the Premier’s Reading Challenge team have had to modify their rules to enable as many students as possible to read enough books to meet the Challenge, in an environment where they don’t have access to school libraries, nor Public Libraries.

They have updated their rules to increase the number of free choice books (books not on the Challenge Booklists) from five to ten. The first five free choice books are entered as usual by choosing ‘Add a free choice book’ on the Student Experience website. However, the additional 6-10 books are added by selecting “Bonus 2020 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5”. The title of these books does not need to be added to the log.

They will also be extending the Challenge to Year 10 students in 2021, so that students who are unable to complete the Challenge this year are not disadvantaged. This also means that consecutive year awards such as the Platinum and Gold Certificates and the Medal will still be awarded if a student does not complete the Challenge this year.

It is great to see the PRC Team also allowing ALL students to add stories that have been read collaboratively as a class, in person or online with their teacher, or at home with their parents/carers.

The PRC Team has also provided some tips for extra reading sources here: https://prcsupport.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/24000053005
