Artist in Residence Program

Last term, students were invited to submit a photograph showcasing abstract shapes as an application for the Artist in Residence Program. All student submissions showed creativity and consideration for shape. 26 students were selected for the program, and some of their artworks can be seen below.

This week our annual Artist in Residence Program started with photographer Rhiannon Slatter. Students have been learning about the camera and looking for abstract shapes. They have thoroughly enjoyed their first week, as per the testimonials below! We cannot wait to see what they continue to produce throughout this program!

“It was really fun and I’m learning things about the camera and learning different techniques.” Alec Stewart Year 7

“I had a great time playing around with the settings and testing the shutter speed to create a blurry photo.” Cassie Lafferty Year 7

“It was amazing to make some blurry photos with some moving objects.” Jack Franklin Year 7

BECOMING

Artist Talk: Tuesday 23rd July at 7pm in Bob Whiteway Resource Centre at Beaumaris Secondary College.

A reminder also that next Tuesday we have our artist talk – BECOMING by our Artist in Residence Rhiannon Slatter. In 2017 Rhiannon Slatter began studying the process of a building coming to life, exploring its underlying structure, architectural language and eventual purpose, its reason for being. The project she chose to follow Beaumaris Secondary College in Bayside Melbourne, a new school designed by architects ClarkeHopkinsClarke that revitalises a rundown precinct and fills a void of public education at this level in its local area. Slatter photographed the school’s construction throughout 2017 up to its occupation by students and staff in 2018 and 2019. The technique of digitally layering these collected images considers parallels between the buildings’ assembly and the learning that now takes place there, seeing education as also occurring in layers; a process of building knowledge in the development of a deep understanding of the world and our place in it.

Becoming is currently on display in Bob Whiteway Resource Centre at Beaumaris Secondary College.

Becoming will also be exhibited at Bayside Gallery later in the year alongside other key works from recent series.

Please ring the school office on 8569 9200 to RSVP.
