In the Prep One room we have been very busy!
In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We have been modelling sums using concrete materials and learning how to write sums using the mathematical symbols + - = . We have been playing maths games based on addition and subtraction.
Our writing topic has been narratives. We have been learning how to describe characters and settings. We have read “Stickman” by Julia Donaldson, have made our own ‘stick people’, and will be writing a story about them. We are continuing with our Let’s Decode reading program. Coming up we are doing special Show and Tell presentations for a ‘Speaking and Listening’ assessment – there should be a note in your child’s bag telling you which day they will be presenting.
In Science, we are learning about Living and Non-living. First we learned about our needs and wants, and what we need to stay alive (air, food, water, sleep, shelter, clothes for warmth). We studied what living things need and do (need food and water, they breathe, grow, and reproduce). We sorted and classified pictures of objects into living and non-living and have planted bean seeds and will watch them grow.
Nearly the end of term!

The grade have been really enjoying the problem solving Math lessons. Last week the students had to try and guess the 3 number equation that added to 20 that Miss Shaw was thinking of. The students came up with many different ways to make 20 using three numbers. Students have also began learning about division, they have been doing a fantastic job and have all been eager to have a go.
In Science we walked around the school to see what living and non living objects we could see. We made a big list of all the different objects that we saw as well as categorising objects that we weren’t sure about. We are also growing our own beans in zip lock bags in the classroom. Students are making weekly predictions and observations about their bean.
The students have been showing huge improvements in their engagement and spelling through OG and daily reviews. We are in the process of publishing our own stories. They should be written and illustrated by the end of the term.

The grade 2/3s have been continuing their work on narratives, as well as adding a steady collection of spelling and grammar rules to their tool kit. There has been a focus on upleveling their sentences to turn them from good sentences to extraordinarily brilliant sentences. All students have been working really hard at this with some fantastic results.
In maths we have been focusing on the properties of 3D shapes. It was great to see the class engaging with the shapes around to understand what makes them the shape they are. They worked so well that the entire class was rewarded with a student of the week award, which sits proudly on the whiteboard as a reminder of how hard the worked.
In science we have been studying living things. Dayna has them growing peas in jars at the entry door. Feel free to come and have a squizz. I have been working with them on studying the different vertebrates and what the difference and similarities are.
It has been a great few weeks in Grade 2/3.

Students have been working hard to write, edit and revise narratives. We will be publishing these in the coming weeks and making picture story books to share.
We have also been learning about calculating the area and perimeter of different shapes and converting units of measurement.
In Science, students have enjoyed learning about how plants and animals adapt over time. Students are creating their own animal complete with structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations to demonstrate their understanding of this unit.
