BOOK WEEK

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful effort that was made for the Book Week Parade last term, it was a wonderful day and fantastic to see the children share their favourite characters. And the Crayons looked great!

We hold a competition with the children for Book Week. They read the CBCA’s (Children’s Book Council of Australia) shortlisted books and see if they can pick the winning Book of the Year. Congratulations to our winners Harper Baricevic (Picture Book of the Year – The All New Must have Orange 430 by Michael Speechley) and Tyler Bradley (Early Childhood Book of the Year – Trickery’s Bad Day by Alison Lester) They have both won a $20 voucher to spend in the next Book Club. Also special congratulations to Mr Jobe for being the ONLY teacher to pick one of the winning books!

This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to look into the different elements involved in creating a book, what works and doesn’t work different formats and expressions of literature, the artwork/illustrations and how it integrates with the text.

We were lucky enough to have the delightful author/illustrator Lucinda Gifford come and talk to the students and staff. This was amazing and the children loved the insight involved in the creative process of creating a book. Sophie Cronin and Jaelah Milkins did a fantastic job looking after and introducing Lucinda to the school, great job girls!

LIBRARY NEWS

It has been a busy term in the library with the majority of time spent cataloguing and covering new books.

Book Fair raised an impressive $356 in Scholastic rewards which went directly into our non - fiction collection, thank you to the P & F for their wonderful effort!

The teachers and I have been collating a wish list over the last year. It has been purchased this term and will be sitting in the collection by the end of term.

We have also have a lot of new decodable take home readers that will be available next term.

A massive thank you to the following families; Sherar, De Rues, Hadicke/Cook, Bell, Martin, Broadmore and Le Serve that have donated books this term - It is very much appreciated - especially our author signed copies of books - very special, thanks Alice.

So many books - So much contacting!

AUDIO BOOKS

With school holidays coming up, I thought I would share something that saves my sanity during the long car trips: AUDIO BOOKS! - we listen in the car and the kids love them... and they don't fight or poke... or look at each other the wrong way!  Audio books are a great way to share books with your children, and are particularly useful if your child has difficulty reading, loses interest or is finding bigger books overwhelming. I know children who listen as they are going to sleep at night, or as a tool for children to calm down. Some older children like to follow along in a physical book as well (Do the adults all remember the old read along books we had - with records?! they were so wonderful)

If you are a member at West Gippsland Libraries (If not you can sign up online and access them immediately) you can access BorrowBox and hundreds of audiobooks for free. If you would like any more information or help with this, let me know.

UPCOMING LITERARY EVENTS

Coming up on Saturday October 12th there is a Children's Literature Festival in Fitzroy. It is a wonderful event with many amazing writers and illustrators there to meet entertain and inspire our little humans with the magical world of books. I would highly recommend going - there is a cost involved but it is well worth it, check out the link below.
