Monash University Pharmacy Outreach Visit
This week our students had a fantastic opportunity to learn about the chemical structures of medicines and how they interact in the body to treat health issues.
Monash University’s Pharmacy Faculty ran a free outreach program for our Senior Chemistry and Biology students and those from Year 10 interested in a possible medical career. Students learned from PhD students about medicines and how they work from a theoretical and hands-on perspective. We were joined by students from Kyabram P-12 College for the sessions in our new science laboratories.
The Year 10 and 11 students enjoyed working with giant protein models, building drug molecules with molecular kits and designing LEGO drugs to treat specific diseases. Year 12 Chemistry students focused more on the properties of organic functional groups and how these give drugs their specific mode of action and characteristics.
We thank Monash University for extending this opportunity to us and for allowing us to apply our knowledge to a real world setting. It was also great to learn about pharmaceutical courses and careers.
