What's happening in our

learning communities?

Presented by the Years 2K and 2EN classes

In Mathematics, Year 2 students have been exploring the measurement of various objects and shapes.

First, we investigated whether the size of an object is related to its mass.  We filled a cup with various objects of the same material to test this idea.  We discovered that small objects can be heavy and large objects can be light.  This did not match our prediction and was an interesting finding!

Next, we explored measuring the mass of various classroom objects by using the balance scales and one single measuring object. This allowed us to compare the mass of various objects. We were surprised by just how many unifex cubes had to be used to measure various classroom objects.

We have also been learning about capacity. This week we have measured the capacity of various containers by engaging in a measurement inquiry using sand from the sand pit!

The Year 2s have enjoyed the practical and hands on exploration of Mathematics lessons this week.

As well as Maths students have been enjoyed learning about force in Science, Scratch in Digital Technologies, PowerPoint in Media Arts and plants to include in our new Butterfly Garden. The Year 2 students will be working with a local group called Bringing Back the Butterflies to establish a Native Butterfly Garden in the school.  We have researched many fact sheets and have decided on a list of plants to include in our garden. We hope to plant various Wattles, Yellow Buttons, Blue Squill and Chocolate Lilies this term...watch this space!

2EN have seen a new face in their classroom with Julie Jurkovic teaching the class while Mrs Elson and Mrs Niejalke take leave this term.  Miss Jurkovic has found the students to be very welcoming this week and she has loved getting to know them!  She is very lucky to know some of the students already from her time at St Gabriel's over the past five years. She had a great week together so far and both classes look forward to fun and learning over the next nine weeks!
